I am. What an amazing life story.

Both RCC and COI opposed his plans for healthcare reform. Shower of pricks.

He was very handsome.

Chickenkeev · 31/07/2023 23:06

I remember learning about him at school. But i didn't fully understand what he did. Looking at it now, he was amazing!

The priest with his "episcopal super dignity" might as well have said "that would be an ecumenical matter"!

'Shower of pricks' is the absolute best way to put it ❤️

The unadulterated disdain and outright hatred of women was shocking. Cunts.

The way people were ostracised when they didn't toe the line was shocking.

LookingGlassMilk · 31/07/2023 23:21

I'm watching it. He such a look of pain on his face when the woman rang in to tell him about the nuns making her pull down his posters. It's shocking how awful the church were. They'd rather throw the bodies of children into septic tanks than have them treated for free by a 'communist' health care system.

Yes to all this. The church and the state threw women under the proverbial bus for so long. And all the men stood back and watched. I campaigned for Repeal and i'm still massively traumatised from it.

Some beautiful scenic shots of the west of Ireland in it too.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 31/07/2023 23:52

It was a really good documentary. Very moving. My mother speaks very highly of Noel Browne, but while I know his name, I didn't know that much about him. He was an amazing man. To retrain in psychology and eventually go back into politics afterwards took some guts. Not even the Church of Ireland schools would take his daughters. He was completely ostracised. If 'the hierarchy' was against you, you hadn't a hope. The scene at the grave was poignant. He was loved by his family and friends and had the respect of many.

I only saw the end of it but must see if I can watch it back.

I've recorded it.
What a man !

JaneJeffer · 02/08/2023 12:52

I was annoyed the film ran out just as he was about to speak of his time in Manchester and then they didn't go back to that when it resumed!

He was so interesting to listen to.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 02/08/2023 14:03

Yes. It is great to have the film at all though as the interviewer had become ill with a form of dementia and the whole thing had been shelved. He was so overcome when remembering the death of his mother. So traumatic for them.

newfloorplease · 02/08/2023 14:24

It's being discussed on Liveline now. His daughter is on it.

Sudename · 02/08/2023 14:29

A fantastic programme about an amazing man. My late dad used to speak so highly of him. We could have had free health care for mothers and children, but good aul McQuaid put an end to that notion!
I read somewhere that Ireland had the highest infant mortality rate in Europe in the 40s and 50s and mothers would never see a doctor at all.
I remember my grandmother saying that she had all her children at home.

newfloorplease · 02/08/2023 14:45

Someone has just proposed that the new children's hospital should be named in honour of him.
I absolutely agree knowing though that Noel Browne would be appalled by its cost overrun and would be questioning it.
Unlike the shower today.........

mineallmine · 02/08/2023 21:43

I saw it and thought it was fantastic. He really was a man before his time. Ireland wasn't ready for him. It's hard to comprehend just how much power the church had.
