Can someone give me a hand with some Irish names, please?

I'm researching my family tree and have found an ancestor who was born around 1815 in Athlone. Her name is Catherine Hopkins. A lot of records were apparently lost in a fire in Dublin and I don't have much on her. But there's a handwritten, hard to read document that gives her parents' names. It's been transcribed by someone phonetically and the names are not necessarily correct - they are given as Orais Hopkins and Brigida Ledan. What do you think? I've just googled Ledan and it seems to be French. I'm wondering if there's a similar Irish name that's more likely. Also re Orais. Many thanks.

Brigid Leddin possibly (Brigida is unknown here in Ireland) Leidhin is the Irish for Lyons but she would be Brigid Ní Leidhin not O’Leidhin (male) and Orais has to be Horace as no Irish name correlates and most people here have “normal” English names esp back in the day eg John Joseph James Patrick Mary Margaret Anne etc … that’s my tuppenceworth anyway

Could it be Liddane? It's pronounced Le Dan so could have been transcribed like that.

Is the document a Baptism Certificate? Birth certs were not around in 1815. Brigida looks like an attempt to ' Latinise' Brigid. Lydon? A Connacht name but Athlone is close.

Hopkins is common in Wales. Wonder if that first name is really Reece / Rhys.

Leidhin could also possibly translate as Leydon / Leyden or Leddin.

Orais could be Oran (Odhran)

caringcarer · 25/07/2023 00:30

I think Brigid too.

Thanks so much to you all! Lots of what looks likely. I'll put these into the Ancestry search and see what comes up.
It's not a baptism certificate, it's a handwritten church record of births, deaths & marriages. Thanks once again.

I love that Orais could be Rhys written phonetically.

There are Leydens in Roscommon. Athlone is on both sides of the Shannon . So that figures.

Hopkins is also very common in England's west country, i.e., Somerset and Dorset especially. And close to the Brecon Beacons area of Wales too.

Yes that's true @DownNative . Spelling can be haphazard on church records and even on census returns. I'm going with Brigid Leyden and Rhys Hopkins though !

According to Edward McLysaght, Hopkins is fairly common in Connacht and in Longford and is an Anglicisation of the Norman/Gaelic Mac Oibicin, also rendered as Habbagan or Hobbikin (both those variants extinct by 1901).

Bridget for sure, given a Latin spin - a lot of church records were rendered as classical or scriptural, hence all the Dionysiuses (Denis) and Corneliuses (Connor), and Lydon seems probable. Orais? - I'd guess Horace - but who knows?

If you find any other Hopkins names you could trawl through the 1901/1911 census records.

Can't move for lads called Dennis round here. Used for Donncha. Then Jeremiah for Diarmuid.

MacLysaght is a treasure trove.

I've found them on someone else's tree and she is down as Brigid Leyden so I'm hoping they know something! Once again, thank you all for your help.

Update: I've found two possible candidates for Catherine's father and they are both called ... Horatio!
