prospective graduate student from Germany looking for a room in Dublin

Hi everyone,

this might be a little off topic but this platform was recommended to me by a friend and active mum on mumsnet.com so I thought I'd give it a go!
I am a 25 year old female prospective graduate student from Germany planning to move to Dublin in September for my masters. I got accepted at UCD for the M.A. Gender, Politics and International Relations and would love to pursue the program starting this September. Unfortunately I've yet to find a suitable accommodation in Dublin to rent from September 2023 til the end of May 2024. Anything from a private apartment to a private room in a shared flat or within a family home would be perfectly fine for me! My budget would have to be 800/month max but I know that prices in Dublin are generally quite high.
I have lived in shared flats for the past 4 years and have also stayed with a host family for a year at 16. I know what it means to respect personal space, clean up after myself and communicate well so that everyone can feel comfortable around each other. Among plenty other things I enjoy anything in the kitchen as well as a good cup of coffee, I'm easy going, I don't smoke and I appreciate a good balance of taking care of myself and getting things done together (:

I genuinely appreciate any type of help in finding a place to stay so that I'll have the chance to come to Dublin in September and finish my master as well as get to know the life in Dublin that I've heard so much about already!
I'll gladly get together over facetime or come to Dublin in late August to talk things over and get to know each other, too (:

With all this said, I hope I am not overstepping by posting this in here and am very grateful to anyone with any leads - Any help is highly appreciated!!!

All the best
Hannah

Hi Hannah, unfortunately the rental market in Dublin is absolutely ridiculous at the moment.
I don't have any specific recommendations, but I wanted to say that if you are attending UCD it's on the N11 main road which means that you can get either the 145 or 155 buses from Bray which will leave you at UCD (although the journey would probably take 45 mins to an hour in morning traffic).

Not ideal, but it is a direct route, so you could potentially look to Bray as it might be cheaper rates than Dublin, plus it has the seaside which is nice.

Not sure if that would help. Best of luck, it's a tough time for renting unless you are loaded I'm afraid.

Talking to a student in UCD recently. Find it hard to believe that there are no campus accommodation for international students , especially considering your fees. I suppose you have tried RentaRoom or Student Union in UCD ? Good luck .

Hi Hannah, UCD have an accommodation office which should be able to help you. A family friend who's kids have all moved out usually has a couple of graduate students over the winter, she's on a register with UCD and they refer students to her. Let me know if you don't get a response from UCD about this and I'll try to find out who to contact.

Best of luck with your studies

Yes Bray. Or even Greystones? The Dart is a good rail link. Sydney Parade stop for UCD.

it really is.. Coming from Berlin I thought I knew terrible rental conditions but it's even worse finding something in Dublin right now... so I really appreciate all of your help on here so much!!!
thanks for recommending different areas aside from Dublin itself, too! I've never been to Dublin nor do I know anyone there so I don't know my way around (: I'll definitely look into the areas you guys recommended!
I've contacted the international office as well as the housing office but unfortunately the student housing provided by UCD is very limited. they've referred me to platforms like AccommodationPad (which I think is connected to daft.ie) but the rent for the properties on there is 1500-2000/month which I can't afford..
I'll definitely have a look at the areas mentioned by you guys, thank you so much! In case you hear of someone having a free room and willing to rent it if only for a few months please let me know and I'll happily come to Dublin for a week before term starts to to meet and arrange everything, too (:

OP there's a website www.rent.ie which might help. I had a quick look at house shares in Bray and you could get a double room for about €700 - €800 a month, including bills (I don't think they are ensuite though). Even less for a single room.
I'm not sure how many would rent for less than a full year though, it might be tricky. Unfortunately the 'student accommodation' blocks are astronomical!

Have a look on www.digs.ie. Most of the rooms are sunday-friday but some are available for the full week.

Hannah, I'll DM you

Sydney parade dart station isn't that close or UCD? Must be st least a 30 minute walk?

Cyanchicken · 12/08/2023 19:52

I'd be looking along the 46a bus route for accommodation - or you can cycle from surrounding areas in stillorgan, mount Merrion, blackrock, booterstown, Donnybrook, ranelagh, milltown, clonskeagh or dundrum. Daft.ie will let you find either shared accommodation or "digs" which is living with a family however a significant number of those families are only willing to provide Monday to Friday accommodation so make sure it's the full week when agreeing.

Good luck! UCD is great
