Good places to eat in Dublin?

Cheesepleaselouise21 · 06/07/2023 15:28

We are planning to visit Dublin in the next few weeks.

I'm looking for some suggestions of nice places to eat.

Some for just tea/coffee and scones to start us off.
Some for meals. It doesn't have to be fancy, just good food eg, chicken and chips, burger and chips, fish, steak etc.

Thanks.

Utterly shameless place marking

Keykat · 08/07/2023 10:24

Roughly what area will you be staying in or visiting? Need to narrow it down a bit, Dublin might not be London but it's big just the same!

Cheesepleaselouise21 · 08/07/2023 19:21

Thank you @Keykat.
We will be arriving at Connolly Street Station, and plan to do The Book of Kells, St Stephen's Green and some shopping.

Dublin has loads of independent coffee shops. Plenty of coffee shops in the IFSC and Grand Canal Dock. Both areas waking distance to where you're staying.

In terms of eating it's impossible to answer really without knowing what you like.

The area around Grafton street has any amount of bars and restaurants you could possibly want. The George's Street/Aungier Street/Wexford Street/Camden Street stretch is also chockablock full of bars and restaurants.

Temple Bar has a rep as a total tourist trap but down the smaller cobbled streets are some lovely little restaurants.

Not sure how many people or if you're travelling with kids but Luigi Malones is a good option to cater for everyone!

Cornucopia on Wicklow Street is an institution for vegetarians

Depends where you're staying but Doheny and Nesbit was fab on Baggot Street, not high end but great atmosphere

Keykat · 08/07/2023 20:11

In the areas you are going to you will be mesmerised with the amount of places you could choose. It's a big busy touristy shopping etc. part of Dublin so get your walking shoes on!

OK for when you get out at the station, there's not much point hanging around there unless you want to see EPIC or walk around the financial district really. So get to Trinity area. My tip for around there is the Kilkenny Design shop cafe. Best scones and treats in Dublin. Well there are more, but I like it there. After that TBH pub grub is your best bet, and the menus are usually good too. I like The Duke, Sheehan's, Davy Byrne's (theatre people go there, good for a bit of drama sometimes!), and the Bailey, especially the terrace where you can people watch.

Have a great time, and let us know if you want any further information. TBH there are so many places to eat and drink in Dublin it is very hard to pin it down as it depends on kids/no kids, budget/area/veggie etc.

For a treat Matt the Thresher and Peploes are my fave for dinner!

Leo Burdocks near Christchurch for fish and chips

Thank you everyone. I'll check out some of these suggestions.

We are a group of adults. No children and we're staying in the Customs House Quay area.

The Harbourmaster and Urban Brewing near Custom H Quay are good spots to fall home to after a day in town lol! Across the river is the Ferryman, a good spot for a bit of craic.

Craic meaning "fun" not drugs 😉

Sorry, haven't read the full thread but the chicken wings in the Elephant and Castle are literally the best thing I've ever eaten. Go there!

Le Maison, which is on Castle Market, off South William Street; Metro Cafe, Chatham Row. Both of these are off Grafton Street.

Oleaginus · 10/07/2023 23:58

I ate at Featherblade on Dawson Street this evening, a lovely steak restaurant. Again, near Grafton street.

Disclaimer: I do go elsewhere but these are the most recent. Also check out pubs on Baggott Street - O'Donague's, Doheny & Nesbitt. Also Keogh's on Sth. Anne st.

IamSTARVING · 11/07/2023 00:02

I was there recently and went to The Ivy on Dawson Street.

There was a great atmosphere (at lunch time) and the set menu was tasty and very reasonable. Shepherds pie, duck, that kind of thing. Around 40 Euros a head (without alcohol).

We had another lunch in the pub a previous poster mentioned - Dohney and Nesbit. Again - very tasty and reasonable.

I missed dinner as I was sick so no evening reccomendation.

Lucky you op.

Toscana on Dame Street is a nice Italian. There’s a nice little French place at the gates of Dublin Castle called Chez Max.

LadyEloise1 · 11/07/2023 08:56

No27 The Shelbourne Bar in the Shelbourne Hotel on St Stephen's Green is lovely.
Great atmosphere and good to people watch.
Afternoon tea there is a treat. Booking is essential.

I would agree.

Careful on the swings outside the restaurant! (anyone from Dublin or Ireland should get that reference)

To get to Sophie's you stand at the top of Grafton Street with the St Stephens Green Shopping centre at your 1 O'Clock and walk straight ahead (You could hop on the Luas as it will go up Harcourt Street (might be 2 stops on the Luas, I'm not sure) and you should get to Sophie's.

There are loads of eateries around by the 3 Arena area as you mention you're staying in the Docklands area. There is Milanos (Pizza Express in the UK). There are a few hotels and they have restaurants on the ground floor that the public can eat in too. Agree with the suggestion about the Harbourmaster and CHQ.

If you're looking for something a little bit special, I'd recommend trying to get a table in Chapter One for lunch. Their bookings may be closed for the moment but the food is sublime! If you can't get there, try Dax (another gorgeous food moment) or Pearl Brasserie.

Have a wonderful visit.

LookItsMeAgain · 11/07/2023 09:56

For the type of food you're thinking of perhaps Captain America's on Grafton Street would be suitable? https://captainamericas.com/
