I posted on here a few months back and hits one super helpful replies so here goes…

Me and my family (partner and two young boys 5 and 2) are moving to Kilkenny in a couple of weeks time. Am excited but starting to feel very nervous as while my partner is Irish, I am born and bred in London and have started thinking about how I can help my boys fit in.

We have a large group of friends and family in London and I’m keen we don’t miss our social lives and would love some tips on the best things to do for this. My partner isn’t originally from kilkenny so it is starting anew for us really. I want to start on swimming lessons and perhaps some sport, scouts etc but recommendations for his age group would be fabulous.

I also usually work full time but I haven’t started looking yet so will be with my youngest while my older one is at school. Any childcare tips would be appreciated. I have considered looking for a part time job just for my own sanity while we settle but again would be great to hear from anyone that’s made the move and how they’ve done it!

also any reassuring words that this will be a great move for a family much appreciated!

Kilkenny is an absolutely gorgeous spot as you probably already know!
Sports wise it is a bit of a monoculture . Small ball is yer only man , ie Hurling. At 5 I expect there is some soft ball version of it ?

For the 2 year old there must be a nursery. Maybe a naoinra where they use a bit of Irish. Not essential though. Actually you could do a bit of that - DP also. Fierce handy for homework down the road. I got a retired teacher to give me a few tips.

Swimming is a great idea. Meet other parents etc. For some reason we would meet other blow ins at the weekly Farmer's Market. I'm Irish but not from this town - we're all blow ins !

I'm from Cork and the Cats usually beat us at hurling. Lovely city though. It has a cathedral so you mustn't call it a town !
Good luck 🤞
