Passport renewal - good news!

I applied online to renew my passport last Saturday, after a couple of false starts with the quality of the photo, it was really easy to do.

I was prepared to wait a month for it be returned (no plans to go away until June, so giving lots of contingency time) - when surprise, surprise it arrived today!
It was a straightforward renewal, no name change or anything, but 3 working days later and it's here - I can't believe how fast & painless it was 😁

Just wanted to share the good news, as all I have seen up til now is horror stories of people waiting ridiculous lengths of time.

Hi Taramock, are you UK based? Just wondering as I made an application on the 28 Jan for a renewal, passport office finished it on the 7th and posted it - and I ve still not received! Starting to wonder if it’s lost…

OtterL · 16/02/2023 22:57

Just to clarify, my passport is an Irish passport so it was posted by Dublin passport office on the 7th to my UK address.

TaraMock · 16/02/2023 23:06

Hi @OtterL, I'm living in Ireland, which I guess is why is it was so quick. Sorry you're waiting so long, what a pain ☹
When I applied there was big warnings about delays in posting to the UK because of your postal strikes, are they over yet?
Really hope you get it soon!

My husband renewed his a few months ago. Applied online in the afternoon and it arrived in the post the next morning!

I don't even know how it was physically possible. We're rural Midlands too, so I've no idea how it was printed and posted through our letter box in around 20 hours.

Very impressed!

are you sure ? I thought you had to send your old passport back first, which you can’t do until you’ve submitted the application.

You don't have to send back your old passport if you've less than 6 months left on it.

Have you had an email from the courier? I had an email from tnt to say passport out for delivery.

We had to send ds passport back and it only had 4 months left on it.

Any word on how long it's taking atm?

Blogdog · 14/03/2023 17:59

@Aphrathestorm I renewed DS’s passport at the beginning of February. It took two weeks to come back however I think children’s ones take longer than adults’ as they need to verify the witnesses.

Turnaround times can be found here: www.dfa.ie/passports/turnaround-times/

PP is right, adults seem to be quicker than children's passports. Mine took less than a week, that was start of Feb but I think turnaround time was showing as 10 days then too.

@OtterL I renewed my Irish passport from the UK in January. I got it back within 10 days via Royal Mail. I also renewed my daughter's (from the UK) before Christmas and got it back in a similar timescale.
I'd definitely chase yours up, as that seems like too long a time to be waiting for a courier....

Passerillage · 16/03/2023 11:27

According to the tracker, DD's passport will be issued on the 5th of April. We're going away on the 30th of March (she has another passport she can use if she has to) so I hope they're just managing expectations. Last time I was late with a renewal I was able to send them our flight details and they sent it out to me (from Dublin to the UK) in 24 hours!

Blogdog · 18/03/2023 15:12

@Passerillage DS’s passport arrived eight days earlier than the date the tracker was showing - hopefully you’ll have the same experience!

Can I jump on here instead of starting my own thread and just ask a quick question about the child renewals? I've an appointment for DS tomorrow as we need it in a hurry (elderly sick granny) and the online one got lost in the post! Do the witnesses really need to be known to you? I have to meet DH up there after a meeting and rush in so was hoping we can stop into a garda station up there?! I can get the school secretary to do me...
Any advice on emergency appointments welcome too! I'm english living in ireland so dont know Dublin and traveling from the wild west with 3 little kids to do this tomorrow so want to do all I can to ensure its successful!! 😬
