Moving back to Ireland-cars

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 09/11/2022 15:23

We are in the process of moving back to Ireland and presumed we could bring one car each. But now our shippers are saying that we can only bring one car per household.
this doesn’t seem right to me.

has anyone else made the move and bought 2 cars?

Can you not get the ferry? Where are you moving from? That might help?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 09/11/2022 15:29

I've never heard of that, it's possibly a condition of the Shipping company you're using? There are rules around bringing a car to Ireland from the UK, it has to be registered and you need to meet certain criteria to be exmpt from paying tax see this link but if the cars are both in your names and you've owned them for at least 6 months then I don't see why you can't bring both of them with you? You could contact Revenue and ask, they are sometimes difficult to get through to but very helpful once you do. You might even be able to email your query.

Thanks for the replies.

sorry if I was not clear, moving back from the uk and the shippers are arranged all of the paperwork for things like vrt on the cars.

I was under the same impression as the info that hamsterwheel said above. We have owned both cars here in the uk for over 6 months so should be exempt from VRT, but they are saying we will only get the exemption on one car per house hold.

I will try to get through to Revenue for clarification, but wondering if anyone on here has moved back from the uk and got vrt exemptions on 2 cars for one household

We moved to Ireland this year and brought 2 cars... we came via ferry and did the vrt ourselves!

Daisychainsx · 09/11/2022 15:58

We also got exemption on both cars! Not sure why you wouldn't...

Daisychainsx · 09/11/2022 16:05

Sorry for the multiple posts, just keep thinning if things to add. I drove my car over on UK plates and insurance, filled in the vrt exemption paperwork through the revenue.ie portal, (I just sent them a message and they sent back a step by step lost of what to do. You need a lot of bits of paperwork.), when I got my exemption I was able to book in with the NCT centre for the appointment to switch the plates, they gave me my new reg no. at that appt which allowed me to go get my plates, register for tax and insure the car. Then I was able to book the NCT and that was that. My husband went through the same process. There was no mention of household, was a non issue. I think your shipping company are being awkward but if its easier I'd just drive one of the cars over!

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 09/11/2022 16:26

Amazing!! Thanks so much for that.
we are driving both over so have no idea why the shipping company are even involved in the cars. Will get my dh to take them out of their hands since they don’t seem to know what they are doing

It felt like a never ending task when I was going through all of the paperwork, but in hindsight it was really simple! I just brought my car there at the end of August so if you need any help along the way feel free so send a message nearer the time!

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 09/11/2022 17:57

Thanks so much, really kind of you.
can’t wait til it is all done and we are finally home !!

Hi @Daisychainsx and OP.

we are in the same situation. Taking back 2 cars very soon.

@Daisychainsx you mention they required lots of docs umbers for proof. For me we have:

  • Uk insurance
  • house sale agreed info
  • new lease on Irish house
  • nursery end date uk
  • nursery hold please and start date Ireland
  • ferry tickets for both cars

do you think we would need much more. The 2nd car will be just out of the 6 months rule, so I guess I’m nervous they will try and declined the VRT exemption.
Keen to hear your experience.

Daisychainsx · 12/11/2022 06:43

My husbands car was just out of the 6 months too, as long as you have proof of when you bring it over you're fine. I had to send the ferry receipt with the car reg and date of travel on it. I'm trying to think what else I needed... the cars receipt, which I didn't have so they said I could just write my own with the date I got the car and the price I paid, my UK insurance certificate and log book, evidence of UK road tax or insurance payments just to show I had owned it. I think I also needed payslips or something, Bank statements from both countries, a PPS number I believe... loads of random bits. If you sign up to revenue.ie or get a mygov account (if you haven't already) just send an enquiry and someone will tell you everything you need 😊 they were very quick tk reply and super helpful!

Apologies for the slight derail but any recommendations on moving companies, and a rough idea of the cost of moving a houseful of contents?

Daisychainsx · 12/11/2022 10:40

I cant help you there but didnt want to not reply. My husband has big vans for his work so we just used them and did a total DIY job, and stored all of our stuff at his workshop which saved us a fortune. I think storage units can be quite pricey so if you're able to move your stuff straight into your new property that will make it much cheaper. We moved over in March and just got the keys for our house 4 weeks ago 😵😵‍💫 we'd have been paying a fortune in storage for all those months.

CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark · 13/11/2022 13:52

Thank you @Daisychainsx
What you are telling me is that they are reasonable and not looking for a fault once they have sufficient evidence. That’s a relief. I have this odd feeling that they will make it difficult, but clearly unfounded.

In terms of ferry ticket, is that just the ticket or they even need proof it was on the ferry?

@AutumnAgain we are using a removals company, will DM you.

Ringbling85 · 13/11/2022 14:01

@WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0
other things to sort asap are PPS numbers if not already (you’ll need them for childcare, school and claiming child benefit etc)
if you get U.K. child benefit then cancel as you leave. Then apply for Irish child benefit as soon as possible but don’t stress too much as they will backdate up to a year if not more.

Daisychainsx · 13/11/2022 14:41

They just needed the ticket! No other evidence needed :) they do require you to have all of these things printed for your appointment so make sure you have access to a printer!
It was very straight forward when I got my head around it, it's such a stress moving over but just do one thing at a time. Between getting a PPS number, Bank account, changing my driving license and my address on everything, registering with a GP, applying for my teaching qualification to be approved by the iriah teaching council, and all the other bits and bobs you need to do, I found it quite overwhelming (I'm originally from the UK).
I used to dream about the day I could just sit on my backside and do zero paperwork, and never thought I'd ever get there... but that's exactly what I'm doing today and its all a distant memory! It'll all get sorted!
