Leaving Cert - Points Announcement

Best of luck to all the families awaiting LC results tomorrow. The wait is almost over.

For those of you who have been through the mill already, do you have any advice on how to word the results announcement? DC will probably do well, has worked ass off, is chasing several high points courses and will hopefully get an offer of at least 2nd course choice next week. Need to be sensitive to cousin who is hoping for a course which will require maximum points but at least he has been offered a place in a European Uni.

Haven't a notion of stating the actual points achieved.

On the other hand, DC may bomb, so need back up announcement too.

So, without stating points, did you have a way of saying your DC had done well, or otherwise?

No need to announce....

threadneedle · 01/09/2022 22:37

I was always vague, I hate that everyone feels it's their right to know everyone else's results. DC are entitled to privacy. Fingers crossed your DC gets the course they want, I'd just say he's pleased all the hard work paid off. It's easier to be vague about the actual points now that they are such random numbers rather than 3As, 4Bs etc.

SageRosemary · 01/09/2022 23:54

@ChateauMargaux apologies, announcement is not the right term, this will not be anywhere near social media, just a text to let grandparents, godparents and close family know how DC has done, definitely not mentioning actual points as stated above.

@threadneedle yes, I definitely want to keep it vague, there will be no mention of actual points. Thanks for your good wishes and advice. Privacy will be respected completely.

I am trying to avoid a situation where I get a text like this from sibling, "Jimmy got 580 points, he's gutted/Jimmy got 625 points, he's thrilled, how many points did Alex get? I would rather say something first, with zero reference to points, and cut off any nosey questions at the pass.

I may just go with "DC1 passed everything, just hanging in for an offer next week now!"

We used to say 6 honours or 8 honours or whatever, which meant an min C in an honours subject.
Not sure it's still described that way, but avoids the number crunching.
Hated the points comparison too. I got my 8th choice on CAO form. Was disappointed on the day, but ended up being the right move for me, couldn't have worked out better.

Joolsin · 02/09/2022 00:47

I've always stayed away from specifics and asked "is Jimmy happy with his results?" and left it at that. I've come across some desperate braggers down the years and would never announce the actual numbers.

Felicity42 · 02/09/2022 01:01

I said 'Jimmy seems happy enough with what he got and hopefully to get where he wants, but only time will tell next week. How did X get on, is he happy enough with his?"

SageRosemary · 02/09/2022 10:45

@Thirder , @Joolsin , @Felicity42 Thanks for your input.

We've kept it very vague, DC1 has done very well indeed, fingers crossed for an offer next week. Cousin appears to have done well too but not to have achieved maximum points so most likely won't be offered place in Ireland but thankfully he does have insurance place abroad. It's all about supply and demand now so we can only wait to see what happens with Irish offers next week.

Well done to all who got their results.

Going on all the reports in the media there's going to be a lot of disappointment next week when the CAO offers are out as the inflated results mean there's a big increase in pupils getting high points but still only the same number of places available so places will be allocated on a random draw meaning so many will not get their chosen place. Last year there were cases where those who got 625 points didn't get their courses.

SageRosemary · 04/09/2022 09:37

Yes, @honeyrider , it is an anxious wait now. Not many can be sure of their first choice place. I do believe there are some extra places available on some courses this year. Random draw may be "fair" but it's so cruel to those who don't make the cut. And now the genie is out of the bottle I don't know how they are ever going to get back to normal points, it's tough on anyone who performed well in 2019 but wasn't ready for a college place for personal reasons at that time.
