Ireland - GP prices around the country

Just curious to hear what GPs around the country (Ireland) charge?

I paid €50 for a visit last week. GP didnt know what was wrong so no treatment/advice at that appt.
This week it turned into something else so I went back again. €30 for a follow up and I was prescribed antibiotics. Had to pay and extra €10 on top of this for a cert for work. The doctor typed and printed the cert at the same appt and before this would have been included in the cost.

Are others paying similar for follow ups and paying for certs on top of the appt?

Just curious really.

I have health insurance so can claim it back next year.

I'm so glad children can visit the GP for free now. I remember when DS was a baby, he had regular chest infections. We were really struggling for money at that point and had to wait until pay day to be able to take him to the doctor.

Dublin GP. General appointment is €60. Follow-ups are €40. Out of hours (Lukedoc) is €70.

Givemeallthegin8 · 25/06/2022 13:00

South Dublin and gp is 65 euro . Dd is 9 so also 65.
we have health insurance and have a laya clinic beside us so anytime I need a doctor I just go to the laya clinic as it’s free With our policy .
Certain things I go to gp with and I really begrudge paying the fee! My Gp is excellent but I just find it so expensive, especially if meds are needed on top.

dd9 had some minor health issues recently ( luckily all ok) we had to go privately as gp said waiting lists are just to long . Paid out over €500 in two weeks for ultrasound and consultant . It’s just not affordable at all

dd4 needs to see a consultant about something else ( also minor ) but waiting list is 18 months so we have to pay 250 to see consultant. Am fed up!!

Blogdog · 25/06/2022 13:34

Even the private consultant waiting lists are insane now. I need to see one and was given an appointment 9 months away. I can only imagine what the public lists are like.

There is also not a single private child psychiatrist accepting new patients in the Dublin area and trying to access CAMHS on the public system is nearly impossible. It’s an absolute scandal and a real failure of government to manage our overall health system.

Isittimef0rbedyet · 25/06/2022 16:49

Dublin is that little bit steeper then. It seems insane having to pay €100 if you needed an appt and a follow up.

No, its really not affordable having to go private. Fine if the insurance pays up front but not in cases where it doesnt 😑

Wow cant believe its a 9 month wait for the private consultant you need! People are suffering while they wait.

@Blogdog the issue with Camhs is a disgrace. The children are being let down.

My older DS has also had a poor experience with the public OT this year. They will see you if referred but cannot discharge you fast enough.

My youngest have now been referred to psychology and I am told waiting lists are not as long as they used to be. But if its like the OT, this will be because they are discharging children without therapy. They used to give a block of therapy sessions. Now it seems to be: here are you recomendations sent in a letter by post.

Ours is €65 for an adult and €40 for a child. They are absolutely excellent and when I compare them to some of the stories I read here on MN I'm happy to pay it. Bloods are €20 I think. I'm in Limerick

honeyrider · 25/06/2022 22:35

€60 or sometimes €65 for routine GP appt. bloods an extra €10.

DH saw a GP - not his regular GP last week and was misdiagnosed, told he had an ear infection despite having a very swollen face and head, feeling flu-like with very high temperature so ended up in A&E with cellulitis having intravenous antibiotics pumped into him and told he was very lucky.

Add in the cost of the medication that GP prescribed that wasn't suitable so stopped by the A&E doctors then having to get much stronger antibiotics and anti-inflammatories suitable for cellulitis to take for a longer time and still on has been costly.

Pantibliss · 26/06/2022 14:37

Around 60 in Meath. I just tryand goes little as possible! Due a smear but at least that's free!

Isittimef0rbedyet · 26/06/2022 17:36

Bloods are included in our appt cost.

Wow @honeyrider very costly. I hope your DH is doing ok.

He's doing much better thanks, he was lucky he went to A&E when he did.

theleafandnotthetree · 28/06/2022 13:10

40-45 here in Sligo, at least it was the last time I had occasion to go.

LadyEloise1 · 28/06/2022 15:08

€60 in Dublin suburb.
@honeyrider wishing your dh a speedy recovery.
I do hope you inform the doctor of his misdiagnosis.

Alfixnm · 28/06/2022 15:14

Currently 55 euros at our GP, big town in Munster. Not sure about follow up appointments. Or GPs are excellent, provide a really good service, and it's not a problem to get an appointment within a day or so of ringing.

I have family in another town 30 minutes away who have at least a one month wait for appointments with their GP so I feel incredibly lucky!!

Isittimef0rbedyet · 28/06/2022 15:21

We are the same @Alfixnm I know if I ring at 9.30 then I can get an appt that day.

It would be awful having that long wait!

hopeishere · 01/07/2022 07:08

I'm in NI where's it free to see a GP but they are mostly phone appointments and are only 10 minutes long. Is that the same in RoI or is it better?

Alfixnm · 01/07/2022 07:23

Everybody I know has in-person appointments with their GP, and always has, apart from at the stricter stages of the pandemic. But that's long gone.

LadyEloise1 · 01/07/2022 07:36

@hopeishere I'd hate to have a phone appointment with my gp.
I'd rather pay and get an in person appointment but I know I am fortunate that I can afford to pay and not everyone in Ireland without a medical card is in that position and it is expensive.

hopeishere · 01/07/2022 07:42

The telephone is fine for some things. But face to face is good too.

turkeyboots · 01/07/2022 07:45

Mine has just increased fee to €60, but €35 for a telephone appointment which is great when I know what I need. And almost always can get squeezed in same same day, apart from Mondays which are always insanely busy.
DS has a long term health issue so we are in and out of CHI Crumlin and Connolly a lot. Its been really noticeable how much busier they are over the last few months.

SparkyBlue · 01/07/2022 22:03

@hopeishere phone appointments were only used at the height of the pandemic and at that in person appointments were still available if deemed necessary.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2022 22:18

Village in Mid-West, €50 for an appointment, extra €10 for bloods. €15 if it's just for bloods, follow up is €30, I think. Not too bad compared to many parts of the country. Can usually get a same day appointment.

Isittimef0rbedyet · 02/07/2022 07:32

I'd like the option of being able to have a phone consultation. I have a couple of recurring issues. When I have them, I know exactly what they are and what I need. Phone appt would be fine in those circumstances.

Off topic, but I've spotted your username before and it's my favourite...I always wish I had thought of it first Grin
I had no idea you were Irish!

Runorsleep · 02/07/2022 13:51

I just find this soooo enraging in Ireland , how is this ok with the high tax that we pay that we still need to pay 60euros each visit plus prescription?!! I’m abroad at the moment and people here were stunned when I told them it’s 60 euros every visit. I wish for once we’d take to the streets about this. We’ve actually had to go to a+e a couple of times abroad and no waiting and in and out super fast, luckily (touch wood) we haven’t had to do this in Ireland but I’ve had friends waiting up to 10 hours in a+e, really 10 hours, Wtaf is this going to be tackled ?
Only positive in comparison to the UK at the mo is I can get an appointment anytime . I’ve also paid privately to have chicken pox and men b vaccine (older kids) administered, it was well over a thousand for all or more iifc.

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2022 14:56

Thanks @Alfixnm Smile Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I'm not actually Irish, despite my Irish DH and DC. I'm a blow-in from England originally but have lived in Ireland for over 20 years now. I'm still working on my accent!

stayathomer · 02/07/2022 15:00

55euro for a visit, 15 for cert or prescription outside of visit, 35 for follow up. Am in the midlands.
