This week I learned that Good Friday is NOT a bank holiday

My whole life I thought it was, everyone behaves as though it is, but officially it isn't. Came up in a discussion, I was insistent that I was right but when I Googled I was wrong. I'm very peeved about being wrong. Grin

Sorry, 'public' holiday not 'bank' holiday. The banks do close.

It is in the UK tho.

Whatalovelydaffodil · 13/04/2022 15:47

Aren't bank holidays always on Mondays?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2022 15:48

Usually on Mondays, but not Christmas or St Steven's Day.

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2022 15:49

Or Paddy's Day

Isn't this semantics in the modern world? There is no observable difference between a public holiday and a bank holiday any longer.

Aposterhasnoname · 13/04/2022 15:50

I guess you’re not in England or Wales then.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2022 15:51

@ToothGrinder

It is in the UK tho.
There are lots of public holidays in other countries that we don't have in Ireland. I don't think the fact that it is one in the UK is what has confused me, considering I live in Ireland, I think it's the fact that everyone behaves like it's a public holiday. There's no question at all of offices etc staying open, I think the workers would revolt if any company tried such a thing.

I'll just point out that this is in Craicnet, so specfically about the country where craic is to be had.

ToothGrinder · 13/04/2022 15:52

Good old Steve.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2022 15:54

@ToothGrinder

Good old Steve.
Blush Stephen! Am I going to hell for that spelling mistake? Grin

@alexdgr8

i don't think good friday is a bank holiday in the uk. it certainly wasn't when i was young.
According to www.gov.uk/bank-holidays#england-and-wales it's a bank holiday in all the UK countries.

It is a bank holiday though www.officeholidays.com/countries/united-kingdom/2022

TheVeryThing · 13/04/2022 15:57

I thought it was a public holiday and not a bank holiday but have never fully understood the difference.
Glad to have the day off anyway, apologies to those that have to work.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2022 15:59

The www.gov.uk website also use the term 'bank' holiday, presumably interchangeable with 'public' holiday. Whereas the Irish website www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/employment_rights_and_conditions/leave_and_holidays/public_holidays_in_ireland.html uses the term 'public holiday, sometimes called bank holiday'.

Ahhosted before seeing your recent posts. And didn't check the board. You are indeed correct, in Ireland it's not a bank holiday though apparently the banks are closed.

oliviastwisted · 13/04/2022 15:59

It is a bank holiday not a public holiday tho

This is Craicnet. I was intending to say 'NOT THE UK' in my OP but I forgot.

Am I going to hell for that spelling mistake?

Probably. Try and stand still all the way through the Good Friday Gospel to attone. (My old dad always said we'd get a soul out of purgatory each if we managed it - he may just have got fed up with our fidgeting however.)

Sorry, didn't realise this was craicnet, thought it was just a general thread. Maybe they dock your Good Friday bank holiday to make up for you having a day off for St Paddy (which ofc we in the UK don't get). The government giveth and the government taketh away, or something.

gogohm · 13/04/2022 16:01

We don't get st Patrick's day so it balances out I suppose.

ToothGrinder · 13/04/2022 16:01

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/04/2022 16:01

It's all very confusing. How did they ever manage to force the pubs to close on Good Friday when it wasn't even a public holiday? (I know that doesn't happen now, but that's only very recent.)
