Cost of hairdressers 😩

Started colouring my own hair as I couldn't justify 60 euro for a cut & colour, glad I started now with the gas & leccie increasing I definitely wouldn't have been able to afford the salon anyways...
I just rang there yesterday to make an appointment for dd's confirmation & was quoted a minimum of 40 euro for an upstyle at a minimum for her & 28 euro for a blowdry for me...
Aibu the think these are crazy prices, I know salons have their overheads but are people really going to be able to continue paying these prices with the huge jump in the cost of living? Fuel, food, energy bills are increasing rapidly....
Dd said she would prefer to put that 40 euro towards a pair of converse to go with her confirmation dress.. She said she would look up youtube tutorials & play around with some styles... I'll do my own blowdry too... 68 euro saved!

My hair (long, rainbow colours) is £300+ twice a year and I'll gladly economise elsewhere to afford it - like anything, it's just different priorities :) hairdressers are allowed to make a living and their costs have risen massively too!

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 11:17

Absolutely, I agree they need to make their overheads but I won't be making my overheads if I keep paying 60 euro for a colour I can do at home for 8 euro & it literally looks the same & lasts as long! I know it's all about priorities before kids my priorities were fashion & travel 🙈 they changed bloody quickly!

I live in Meath and it costs about 100 for a cut and colour. I started doing my own colour so now I only pay 50 for a cut.

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 13:26

The colour is so easy to do at home, I'm sorry I spent so much money (that I didn't have😩) on colour over the years... All the holidays we could have had🙈 my hair is long & naturally wavy so doesn't really need a cut very often but I might even look into a mobile hairdresser who could come to the house & do it cheaper but I think I should get away with it until Christmas 🤞 I wear it up alot.

I pay £150 every 6 weeks for cut and colour.

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 13:35

Is that in the UK or Ireland... Prices vary greatly...

No way does my hair look anything like the look I get from the salon if I do it myself. I think a lot depends on your hair. If you can do it yourself and you are happy with it then work away. I'd make sacrifices and cut corners elsewhere to be able to continue getting my hair done. I've a horrible scraggy head of hair with tons of grey that needs to be done every six weeks minimum

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 14:03

Totally understand where you're coming from, I have to cut back everywhere now to pay for the dc's activities etc... I just really couldn't justify the salon anymore so it has to go .. The 28 euro quoted for a blowdry & the 40 euro for dd's upstyle really pissed me off

Imagine how much salon electric and gas has gone up by compared to yours op?!

Salons spent 8 months unable by law to earn a living.

Now the cost of living has gone up and everything else it has also gone up
For businesses and self employed staff still need to earn the equivalent of minimum wage at least and that's pushing it.

20% of what you pay goes straight to the tax man let alone the hourly rate plus electric gas products and water and the rates lease etc etc.

Work it all out.

People moan about small independents having to up
Their prices like it's a bad thing and yet are quick enough to agree the cost of living has gone up dramatically.

What do you expect people to do op? 🤷‍♀️

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 14:50

I never said the salon upped their prices, they did a while ago but that's not the point.. I was highlighting that I can't justify paying for a service that I can do myself for a fraction of the price... I can't afford it simple as that, it's a luxury that had to go so I could afford dc's confimation party, a holiday, some days out & my dc's activities.. The hairdressers was the obvious cut to make as I can do my colour for 8 euro compared to 60, it's a massive saving

This is what happens in recessions, costs go up, disposable income goes down, people spend less, businesses go under. Its no ones fault its just what is. I just paid £70 for a cut and semi - I'll be buying £5 semi's from Boots from now on, but Ill still pay for the cut.

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 15:42

That's it... I'll cut out all my own little luxuries before I'll cut the dc's activities, they have missed out on so much over the lockdown so paying for those takes priority over the hairdresser & the castings or nice & easy does the job perfect... 8 euro in my local supermarket but boots sometimes have it at 3 for 2...

Just saw on social media that two local salons have increased prices (quite substantially) from today citing energy increases... Sure they are not due for another few weeks!

I started dying my own hair and my husband cuts it. I have curly hair and he learnt how to do a curly cut. It's actually looking better than it has in years. I think you have to be careful with home colour as it can be quite drying. I use Naturigin which is lovely. I also use Olaplex no3 and Olaplex conditioning treatment.

Snoken · 01/12/2022 19:51

60 euro for cut and colour is incredibly cheap! I pay £250 for the same thing and it’s not with one of the expensive hairdressers either.

AngelontopoftheTree · 02/12/2022 12:50

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to say that two hairdressers in our town have closed because they can no longer afford to stay open. Increases in rent & utilities have just pushed them over the edge, there's only so much people are willing to pay for a haircut (& €28 for a blow dry is probably it) so they can no longer make end meet. It's very sad, I hate to see our little main street looking a little desolate because of the empty shop fronts 😔
