Light sentencing in Ireland re crime

LadyEloise1 · 02/03/2022 09:18

Anyone else sick of the light sentences given in Ireland for crime.
I've just seen that a man who raped and sexually abused his youngest sister starting when she was 6 and he was 12 was given 7 and a half year sentence for the rapes. He was given consecutive sentences totalling 5 years for the sexual assaults but the judge decided that sentence would run concurrently with the 7 year term. FFS !!!
Apparently his remorse (yeah right ), the fact he pleaded guilty and he had no previous convictions were mitigating factors. The judge suspended the final 18 months of the sentence, despite the judge saying that the victim was a vulnerable and defenceless child, the offences were humiliating and degrading, that the victim had a right to bodily integrity and that she lived in fear.
Will this child rapist be out in 3 years ?
I am utterly disgusted with this sentence.

What does it mean when they say 'of no fixed address'?

Another one here. Commit a crime and still act like the victim with subsequent mental health issues and sore head.
The poor victim, this horrible system failed her.

I see Ireland is not alone with its light sentencing.
Hue Edwards being given a pathetic suspended sentence for what he did 😮
As far as I know the paedophile who supplied the photos to Huw Edwards was also given a pathetic suspended 12month sentence.

Those poor children involved in those images. 🥲
When will victims' rights come to the forefront ?

2 years still isn't enough, but a slight improvement and should impact on his future employment prospects.

LadyEloise1 · 23/01/2025 17:58

Oh @DeanElderberry 🥲
It's not enough.
FFS 2 years - he'll be out before we know it. AngryAngryAngryAngry

Just read that there now. It's still light to me, but I have to wonder if Mná na hÉireann did not kick up such a stink would it ever have happened?!
I still remember how appalled I was, so much so I complained everywhere I could think of... and got a threatening reply from Dept. Of Justice (I think, I can't quite remember).
💪 slowly but surely we can turn this tide 💪

2yrs is 18months in prison time, 12 months is most I reckon he will do and will be released.

Over crowding is chronic and he will be considered low risk reoffender

BrandyandGinger · 23/01/2025 21:38

You only have to look at the way the Ceann Comhairle was treated yesterday and the number of women appointed as cabinet ministers today so see how much farther Mna na hEireann have to travel.

BrandyandGinger · 23/01/2025 21:45

This is the new cabinet. The two women in the front row were effectively demoted. They had higher profile ministries before the general election.

I know all the Irish posters will already have seen the photo, but I'm putting it up anyway because it's so frustrating.

The 2 women in front had been given ministries beyond their capabilities first time.

TBH. I really don't think education ministry is a demotion or the DECIDY ministry.

Both of these ministries are connected to children.

Foley is terrifying prospect as children's minister, she couldn't be more disinterested in children. That was evident time and again when she consistently was caught on the back foot with the education curriculum.

Norma Foley was completely unfit for purpose as education minister. She most definitely shouldn't have kept her position just because she is a woman. Infact in any other job she would've been actually demoted because she was so terrible at her job!

BrandyandGinger · 23/01/2025 22:50

I not saying that Norma Foley was a good minister. I agree that she promoted too quickly in the first place because there were so few female TDs. It's just depressing that the number of women in the cabinet has actually gone down since the last time.
I think Helen McEntee had good intentions and good ideas about dealing with gender based violence, but her time in office was a disaster for other reasons.
As far as I can tell from following the news today both are generally being viewed as having been given much lower profile ministries this time and only still in at all for the optics.

I would agree moving from Justice to Education is considered a demotion in political circles.

It shows just how much garbage Simon Harris spouted last year claiming he wanted Ireland to be a great country for children.

As for McEntee's attempts re VAWG. A basic start was mandatory minimum sentences, she never attempted that and as for CUAN, that lost all respectability when she made Dr Stephanie O'Keeffe CEO with her involvement in cervical cancer screening failures.

Helen McEntee isn't fit for any ministerial role.

LadyEloise1 · 24/01/2025 14:03

I thought Helen Mc Entee was dire as Minister for Justice.
I was so disappointed with her.

Interesting to see what Jennifer Carroll Mc Neill will do in Health.

DH said it was a poisoned chalice but I pointed out that Micheál Martin, Simon Harris and Leo Varadker were all Ministers for Health and they became Taoiseach............

And health ministry was what did Stephen Donnelly in.

Health is a hard ministry and I have not heard of the minister.

I have had a niggle I should know the name but nothing stood out. I have however since googled her.

Health will be a challenge for her. Only a TD since 2020, health is a big portfolio.

Did anyone see the man in Westmeath only got 2 and a half years for assaulting a client and secretly videoing over 35 clients with no clothes on? Ridiculous sentencing! www.rte.ie/news/courts/2025/0120/1491904-shane-flynn-court/

Yeah but the judge ordered him to pay €5000 to the victim as compensation. So that's makes all square.

The level of misogyny in Irish judiciary is shocking.

Health was also the downfall of Mary Harney.

The health ministry is the ministry the Taoiseach usually gives to someone they feel threatened by.

Leo Varadkar was in the thick of the cervical cancer debacle as the minister determining the state use tax payers funds to defend the indefensible. Health knew that was trundling along with sanctioning an unknown amount of women who were not strong enough to fight and settle for pittance in NDA's.

Health and the Hep C scandal sent Michael Noonan out in the cold for a very long time.

Health can be a make or break portfolio.

It is technically 2 Departments, Health & HSE. DoH control the money HSE distribute the money and it is top heavy with well paid managers in both divisions.
