Moving to Dublin - location advice please!

I’ve started a job in Dublin but am currently splitting working from home with a couple of days in the office - only problem is that at the moment, home is France!

Finding a house has been difficult to say the least, but we have a virtual viewing for a place in Rathfarnham tomorrow and I’d love to know if anyone knows anything about the area?

It’s specifically on Marian Road.

Our kids will (hopefully) be going to the Lycée Français d’Irlande in Foxrock (we’ve a place for our 7 year old already and will hear about places for our 11 and 13 year olds at the end of January) so we don’t want to be too far from the school (I’m working in Dublin 1 but after commuting from France anything will be easier 😂)

My main question then is whether Rathfarnham, specifically Marian Road area, is nice for families?

And which other areas could you recommend which are commutable to the lycée?

Thanks so much for you help, the anxiety at the moment is REAL!

Can't help with schools, we don't have kids, but we live in Rathfarnham. We have been here years, in various houses, so we have moved around a few streets/estates. We really like it, never had any "trouble" (for want of a better word!). Lots of supermarkets, pharmacies, shops, plenty of parks too. Lots of families and kids near us, and in our experience a community feel. PM me if you like!

AnnieJ1985 · 21/12/2021 20:29

I would say, if you are planning to use public transport, check bus routes for any potential house. If if you have the postcode (eircode) you can use Google maps to get route into city centre. The bus stop might be a bit of a walk from your house.

mathanxiety · 21/12/2021 21:06

Rathfarnham is a quite a hike from Foxrock.

Have you looked at Stillorgan, Leopardstown, Clonskeagh, or Blackrock for houses?

AnnieJ1985 · 21/12/2021 21:08

I didn't spot the Foxrock bit! Not sure how you would manage to get there and into Town, it isn't handy at all

mathanxiety · 21/12/2021 21:10

Also Cabinteely, Foxrock itself (esp South Park), Deansgrange area, Cornelscourt, Monaloe estate, Brennanstown Road...

NotThatKindOfDoctor · 21/12/2021 21:42

We have looked closer to the school, but you can add at least 1,000€ a month onto the rent and that’s if you’re lucky.

We’ve 4 kids so a smaller place won’t do (although the youngest is 9 months at the moment). We’re trying to balance commute to school time with budget - my husband will be doing the school run and he’s looking for studio space in Blackrock (he’s a fine artist) so he can drop the older kids off, paint nearby and then all come home together.

Getting our heads around Dublin rental prices after being in rural France has not been easy

Marian Road is a good location. Close to shops, bushy park and a decent bus route into town. The road itself is busy though not a through road your kids wouldn't be out playing on it but there are green areas. Also an excellent library with lots of kids activities.

Rathfarnham villiage also within walking distance, nice playground, castle coffee shop.

All good but if you are set on the school in Foxrock not great. A lot of new houses in Carrickmines if you take a look? Be closer to Foxrock and on the Luas.

Or go to a local school and check out alliance francais to keep the language lessons.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 21/12/2021 23:06

Rathfarnham is a lovely place to live and close to lots of amenities, but not really school-commutable to Foxrock unless you're driving every day, but definitely check out the route on Google maps.
Is the school in Clonskeagh? It's a bit easier of a commute.
Rathfarnham to Dublin City should be roughly 40mins by bus, no other public transport options from Dublin 14 really.

Janeandjohnny · 21/12/2021 23:11

Probably not what you want to hear and I realise your school is already set up etc but......Dublin is a pretty awful place to live even in those areas. Everyone I know with kids is trying to leave.
Crime, homelessness, social deprivation, poor transport. Im sure you have researched well but its gonna be a hell of a change from France. My last friend who moved from France to Dublin with her kids and has just gone back to France.

stayathomer · 21/12/2021 23:11

The traffic from Rathfarnham to foxrock is nuts, I used to commute it and you are literally just sitting there. It's a pity it's around Christmas as ideal situation is to try it out first. Rathfarnham is fab, you have so many parks and amenities but the school thing would be difficult. There's some nice schools around d14, would you not consider them?

Flywheel · 21/12/2021 23:11

That's a good location. Nice area, but not great for Foxrock. Also consider Sandyford/Stepaside areas.

redchicken · 22/12/2021 08:39

Look in the less expensive ideas near foxrock - www.daft.ie/for-rent/house-mount-eagle-rise-leopardstown-dublin-18/3650798

Sandyford, Stepaside, kilternan, deansgrange

Where will you be working in town and will it be full time or will you WFH at all. What's your budget for rent and do you need a minimum number of bedrooms? Folk

Huh ? Confused
TheLongRider · 22/12/2021 09:30

It would be very easy to cycle to D1 from Rathfarnham, it wouldn't take more than 20 minutes. Travelling to Foxrock from that part of Rathfarnham could be a pain the arse.

TheLongRider · 22/12/2021 09:34

The only school by that name is in Clonskeagh not Foxrock. It would take about 20 minutes by car from Marian Road. I live about 2km from Marian Road, it's a safe, middle class area as other posters have mentioned. I wouldn't have any fears walking around it late at night.

That’s ridiculous Grin

Rathfarnham to foxrock would not be commutable for school, although I think the lycee is in clonskeagh? Still not commutable I’m afraid.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 22/12/2021 09:52

@TheLongRider you probably googled, there's one at St Killian's and another in Foxrock, the Foxrock one uses LFI on google.
It's a long, traffic filled nightmare to get from rathfarnham to Foxrock. Rathfarnham is a lovely place to live though.
Maybe look at grey stones, bray, stepaside or sandyford, leopardstown, ballyogan for cheaper areas? They might be the same distance as rathfarnham but not the same traffic.

As someone who has lived across many countries it always amazes me what people will pay for in Dublin when you could live a better quality of life in many other countries or even cities in Ireland.
Janeandjohnny · 22/12/2021 09:56

@Anoisagusaris Its OK to disagree politely. Try it 🤔
www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/abroad/dublin-ranked-the-worst-city-in-the-world-to-move-to-for-housing-1.4102979
That's specifically an expat survey on housing, though. I don't think anyone would disagree that finding somewhere affordable to rent in Dublin is a nightmare. It has nothing at all to do with the crime, homelessness and social deprivation you mention in your post.

I mean, I don't like Dublin myself, and would never live there, but my priorities aren't everyone's.
