NIAC have recommended vaccine for 5 to 11 year olds. I have to say I'm apprehensive about it. Fine with making that decision for myself but not feeling so good about getting the kids vaxxed for something that is so unlikely to affect them.
How is everything else feeling about it?

Ultimately I think we'll probably go with it on order to get on with life. I imagine vaccine certs will be extended to kids for going to restaurants, leisure centres, activities etc.

Well get it for ours, we haven't refused a vaccine yet.

I am still undecided.
The risk COVID poses to that age group seems minimal. I'd be happy to continue with the measures already in place before rushing into it.

I would absolutely get it for mine if they were in that age group. Will stop the spread in primary schools. I was listening to a doctor on the radio talking about vaccines in general. Rubella (German Measles) is almost always a very mild illness in children, but we vaccinate then against it because if a pregnant woman catches it, the effects on the foetus can be catastrophic, so we vaccinate to limit thus. I view vaccinating children against covid in the same way.

*limit this (stupid autocorrect!)

PleasantBirthday · 08/12/2021 16:32

I agree. Besides which, covid is usually mild for children, but we know that lots of children in Ireland have conditions such as CF (apparently more than anywhere else in the world, for genetic reasons) and asthma. It makes sense for them to consider their little pals.

Your comparison to Rubella is a good one joolsin, it does make sense from that perspective.
Will it slow the spread in schools though? If vaccinated people can still pass it?

One of the reasons i want my children vaccinated is to lessen the chance of me picking it up off them - as I don’t want to be too sick to take care of them

My youngest is 11, turning 12 very soon so this won't apply to us but they would be getting it if it did. I don't see any harm in getting it and if it can help reduce overall numbers its good for them and society in general. My dd will be getting vaccinated as soon as she turns 12. I'm not afraid of the covid vaccinations though and see them as a positive, not as a risk.

I’m very undecided. We vaccinated ds at 12 because he was in secondary and exposed to an older age cohort.

I had assumed in the beginning that the vaccinations would stop the spread of covid but that doesn’t seem to be the case. So it seems to come down to the risks of getting it. Dd is in 5th and I’m just not sure.

My youngest is 11, heading towards 12. Yes, I'm in favour of it for her. I don't want her to be at risk a severe illness or long Covid and there is also the benefit for the community, so similar to luinagreine . Children get a tailored dose of the vaccine as their bodyweight is lower than an adult's.

Mine will get it as soon as can. .I believe more vaccinated closer to end of it all. Obviously I can't do much to get more people in world vaccinated but I'll contribute by making sure those in my house are.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/12/2021 21:51

I just cannot understand any hesitancy on this. The vaccine is demonstrably safe. We don't (mostly) prevaricate about other childhood vaccines.

Apart from believing it's a good thing for my 10 yo himself, the practicalities around him being vaccinated will help too. He's had to self isolate 3 times this term, as one or other of his older siblings or me have been awaiting a Covid test result. He's been v frustrated - he himself hasn't been sick at all, but still needed to miss school & activities. He can't wait to be the final one in the house to get vaccinated.
