Trip to Dublin with kids

Looking for inspiration. We’re bringing the DC to Dublin in December (they’re 5 & 7) but lots of places are still closed.

We brought them to the zoo during the summer which they loved and we’d done the Wild Lights in 2019 so no great drive to do that again.

We went to the Explorium in 2019 too which was so fantastic but looks to be staying closed till 2022:(

Are there any other museums or experiences worth doing with children??

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Wax museum
Horse and carriage ride around Stephens green .
Might be something on in The Ark in Temple Bar .
The Dolls Hospital and museum .
The Gaeity Pantomime is a great experience .
You could even just get on a Dart or double decker bus , I’m from Dublin but live rurally now and my kids love getting on a double decker bus ....
Viking Splash tour .
The National Museum has a family day on a Sunday where kids get to make art and partake in workshops Etc for free Don’t know if it’s ongoing with Covid but you could ring and find out .
Dead Zoo - National history museum , great collection of animal bones and taxidermy , right across from Merrion square which has a overly playground .

Dolls Hospital is closed, the owner sadly died earlier this year.

Basicbitch40 · 25/10/2021 13:57

Sadly no more Viking Splash tour either. It shut down.

Snowdropsandbluebells · 25/10/2021 13:59

Dead Zoo is closed for renovation

Dublinia?

RedLemon · 25/10/2021 14:42

Thanks for all suggestions. I’d forgotten about Dublinia so will check that.

The Ark and the National Museum are on the cards- is the Archaeology one in Kildare Street or the Collins Barracks one better do ye think?

Archaeology one is far more interesting than Collins Barracks imo.

Not sure when you are coming but mine liked a day at the races, at Leopardstown. Can get the Luas.
My boys also always loved getting a double-decker bus and sitting right at the front on top, and the DART. Greystones is a nice trip by the sea, a nice village, great sweet shop!

SparkyBlue · 25/10/2021 20:28

Mine love the national museum in Kildare st.

Could you drive out and have a winter walk on Portmarnock beach /coast line? Then grab a hot choc/coffee/ food in Malahide ?

Is Bewleys still in Dublin? Always went over from England to Bewleys at xmas as a child with my mum ( Mum's a Dub). ( my auntie used to work at Bewleys in the early 60's. We used to go to Howth as well over xmas and get fish and chips.

We spent many a winter walking Dublins coast lines as children at xmas, then back to Nans in Ballyfermot for midnight mass and fryer ( nan did sausage, bacon, egg and mash potato with scallions ). Then we went to bed waiting for Father Christmas to come.
The last one up ( grown up) always had to clean the grate out, shovel the coal and light the fire. Nan ( born in Dublin in 1906) always allowed an overnight fire burning on xmas eve only so , we kids were warm when we woke up in the middle of the night to see what father xmas left us. The rest of the yr we were freezing when we visited.

I see now it was all she could afford. Lovely memories of xmas at "Dublin Nan" house.

The Portmarnock seaside and the chip shop dinner on the 23rd of Dec, by my parents and auntie and uncle made it magical for me and my cousins.

That’s so lovely! We’ll definitely be doing fish and chips in Howth one evening.

I too had a gorgeous “Dublin Nan”- there was always a little fire burning in the grate when we visited for lunch and it was always bread rolls, ham from the local shop, and Fanta in tea cups- then a Teatime Express pineapple cake for dessert! The smell of coal fires and the taste of Fanta bring me right back there. We visit my aunty now with my DC and she’s giving them equally lovely memories😌 Even if we do nothing but play in her garden and let her stuff them with home-baked goodies (she’s just the best baker), they’ll have a fab holiday!

My nan did a good line in warm red lemonade and congealed strawberry jelly. She had no fridge so everything was cooled on the marble slab in the larder cupboard. Every time we had tea (every hr) all the best china came out and the tin kettle went on the old stove, next to the sink where where we all washed!!! Us kids had the broken cups and the best cups were kept in the parlour, which no one was allowed in apart from the parish priest or dead family members.

If you went near the " good room " door you were in trouble! There were only 2 rooms downstairs, one of which we never set foot in!!

RedLemon · 20/11/2021 23:08

😂 Ah the good room!
