Which supermarket is the best?

I do my main shop in dunnes and top ups in aldi or tesco. The prices in dunnes are shocking but the 10 off 50 voucher seems to even it all out? Or am I being fooled? Tesco has a great selection but I seem to spend a fortune there. So which do u all think is best?

It depends what you buy.

My shopping costs least at Tesco but I buy lots of fruit & veg, lentils, frozen fish etc. I don't buy brands, alcohol or much processed stuff. The green grocery turnover seems to be fastest in my area as well.

Coffeeanddarkchoc · 31/08/2021 18:12

I have two siblings who say that about Dunnes, that the money off means it doesnt cost much more than other supermarkets.

I shop between my Aldi and Tesco because the staff in my local stores are more pleasant there. I dont find much difference in price between Aldi and Tesco.

Blogdog · 31/08/2021 21:23

Have shopped in Tesco for years but recently switched to Dunnes as it’s more convenient when wfh. The prices are definitely more expensive - a shop in Tesco that would normally come to €180 was around €220 in Dunnes. Yes you get the vouchers but it forces you to go back to Dunnes to actually see the benefit of them. I do think the choice is that bit better in Dunnes though - nice cheeses and fancy goods.

Am always floored when I go to Lidl at how cheap it is though Smile

SparkyBlue · 01/09/2021 18:01

Depends on what works for you. I love Dunnes but I switched to tesco home delivery during my last pregnancy and it was a life saver. I now use tesco click and collect and it's great. Anytime I've tried Lidl or Aldi I've always had to go to Dunnes or tesco to get a few branded items so I've always felt like I had to do two shops so not worth the hassle.

Pucarbuile · 01/09/2021 18:10

Dunnes is best for me, greatest selection and the vouchers. Although I was a day late with my shop at the weekend and they'd expired Angry My back up is supervalu as it's in walking distance/ on the school run so I can grab bits there as needed. I go to Aldi for washing powder (only one that doesn't reek of artificial fragrance) and fake pepperamis that ds loves.

PepsiHoover · 01/09/2021 18:13

Asda is the best.

Every tesco near us smells like a toilet. And they're too expensive. I refuse to shop in any supermarket that doesn't have scan as you shop. So Aldi, lidl etc are a no for me.

theleafandnotthetree · 02/09/2021 16:58

Aldi all the way for me, with occasional forays to the more local Supervalu for the odd branded product or to top up. The price difference is huge, unscientific I know but I would get 4-5 full bags of groceries in Aldi for the same as 3 in Supervalu.

MrsScrubbithatescleaning · 02/09/2021 17:22

I mostly use Supervalu as I like the variety of foodstuffs, topped up by Aldi and Lidl. There’s no Tesco nearby but we do venture to Dunnes about once every couple of months for a few bits.

I find the €7 or €8 off a €40 shop vouchers in Supervalu work for us.

LadyEloise1 · 07/09/2021 09:15

I use Tesco the most as it's convenient to me.
I like Dunnes for the variety. I think the "vouchers off" are a con as I'm sure they've factored that in to their pricing policy.
If there was a Dunnes nearer to me I'd use it more than Tesco as I would prefer to support an Irish company with my custom as more of the profits stay in the economy.
I use Aldi and Lidl too as I like their "Aisles of Wonder", their food offerings and their prices. They really are so much cheaper.
I like one particular Supervalu and if I'm in that area, which is seldom, I'll pop in for a few things.
I also buy the odd few groceries in M&S and Dealz.

You ask which is best @Feckinlego.
They all have pluses and minuses.
For me, convenience wins out. Others will base their judgement more on price and the selection on offer.

SionnachRua · 09/09/2021 23:54

Dunnes are notoriously horrible to their staff, I don't like to shop there because of it. Not high on my 'must support' list.

Lidl/Aldi are good imo and then I top up in Tesco and SuperValu.

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2021 23:59

For me it's SuperValu because it's the only one reasonably close to me. I have to drive quite a distance for Dunnes so the petrol I use getting there cancels out any savings. I find Tesco ridiculously expensive, so only buy a few bits there. I use Lidl and Aldi occasionally but not for a full shop.

Tiramiwho · 10/09/2021 00:06

Probably 50/50 Tesco and Aldi for groceries and ( larger )Home Bargains for the fabulous pet food Aisle alone ( though Aldi's Pet food and biscuits are great quality and most economical too )🐾

MrsPumpkinSeed · 10/09/2021 00:10

I love lidl and aldi. I prefer lidl slightly more as I feel its quiet in store and wider aisles and better value.
But I do nip into Dunnes and Tesco (have been to all three within the last 24 hours) as I get bored of the same items.

Feckinlego · 10/09/2021 13:45

Well I've done my shopping in aldi now today and last Friday. Spent €150 both times. Its usually 120/130 in dunnes, that's with a lot nicer bits and pieces and more brands. Think we just prefer dunnes. So that's decided it for me I think. Dunnes for the main shop and aldi/lidl for top ups. Ill also stock up on the things that are cheaper in aldi (tinned salmon for example) when I'm in there. Really interesting reading everyone's views though!

That's a decent price for Dunnes!
Good to compare. There are lovely bits in Dunnes. Cereals are expensive though fish and the 3 for 10 meat offers are excellent

thelegohooverer · 11/09/2021 07:52

Aldi for the main shop and I top up once a month with a delivery from Tesco/SuperValu depending on what I’m looking for.

I used to go between Aldi and Tesco every week but over time I switched to more and more Aldi products.

I really appreciate the simplicity of Aldi - no real choice therefore no mental load comparing brands and prices, checking special offers or wondering whether to buy the big box of Rice Krispies or two small ones. In Aldi I could do the shop with a blindfold on. And I’ve never been shocked at the till because the price was switched on the shelf. I just can’t be doing with all that nonsense these days.

SunscreenCentral · 28/09/2021 22:51

I love them all, (except Tesco) and I'm lucky to have them all on my doorstep.
Dunnes and Supervalu for mote quality ingredients/items when essential and Aldi and Lidl for actually great standard basics.
We have a local butcher and fishmonger in the village. I consider myself very fortunate

JaneJeffer · 29/09/2021 13:24

I prefer Dunnes because there's less choice so it's way faster to shop. Tesco is too distracting with 100 versions of everything. Don't like Aldi and Lidl is depressing.

Feckinlego · 29/09/2021 14:14

Yes I agree, dunnes has enough of a selection but not so much that it's overwhelming. I think tesco is probably cheaper for individual items than dunnes but I always end up spending a fortune there because there's such a big selection.

OP posts:
decafforme · 29/09/2021 14:16

I really like aldi. I top up anything I can't get or midweek with tesco just because those two are the closest to me but I find Tesco selection is sometimes quite poor on certain things and the stock seems to run low a lot.

CharityDingle · 06/10/2021 20:48

Mostly shop in Dunnes and Aldi.

Procrastination4 · 07/10/2021 13:51

Our two local Super Valu stores are really good in terms of quality, cleanliness and helpfulness of staff. For some reason, I don’t like Tesco and wouldn’t buy meat there in a fit (but that may just be something ingrained in me by my mother!) I also love the Dunnes Stores on the western outskirts of Cork city (VASTLY different to a branch on the northern side) and, in response to a previous poster, my friend’s daughter (3rd level student) works there and is very well treated indeed. I often shop in our local Aldi too, and it’s fine, though choice is more limited. M&S is only for occasional shopping as I prefer to buy Irish where possible. Actually that could be the subconscious reason for my dislike of Tesco! I always go for Irish products in Aldi, and luckily, there’s a very good range from which to chose.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/10/2021 20:23

I go between SuperValu and Lidl. They are both good where I am and close by. Lidl is better value for money. SuperValu is great quality, with a very good range of products, but a full shop there is very pricey. There's a Dunnes too, which is also good, but I couldn't be bothered dealing with another shop.
