All my friends kids, nieces and nephews have really strong American accents and I've even heard them use words like candy and trash can. What's going on? Hmm

It’s the same in England I’m afraid. Like like kinda like at least six times in every sentence (Dh loses his shit over that), And yes biscuits are now cookies (which gives me the rage). We are fighting a losing battle.

I had an aunt who visited relations in Boston in the 70's for a three week holiday and to this day has an American drawl. You get offered a Cwaafee in her house Grin

That said, the young lad comes out with some Americanisms. But he watches a lot of You Tubers (Yoo-Toobers) where they'll talk about trashcans, eggplants , sidewalks and sodas and he's picked up some of that.

Apparently US kids have watched so much Peppa in lockdown that they're talking with British accents so it goes both ways! www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jul/19/peppa-pig-american-kids-british-accents

My 4yo has picked up v v v annoying habits from Mickey mouse, eg she says pleee-yas instead of please and why-un instead of one Angry

But my son did not know what a lever was. I had too say leee-ver and then he say 'oh right!'

Lee-ver is the british/english pronunciation isn’t it?

Lev-er is american?

I don’t feel so bad about my kids mid-Atlantic accents now.
We live in the Caribbean, kids going to a British curriculum school but there is such a mix of accents that their accent is what I call British drawl.
Wahder instead of water, Carder instead of Carter (DS1s name), trash, candy, cookies, gas station etc. They don’t know what trousers are (because they don’t wear them).
The only thing they do say with a quintessentially British accent is “Mummy” but more often than not call me Mama.
But by the sounds of it, at least they won’t sound out of place when we eventually come back to UK to visit!

You are right! I expressed it the wrong way round. I said it the eee way and he asked. I then pronounced it the american way and he understood!
