Is Covid emigration going to take hold soon?

I realise that everyone has different views on what is right and wrong in terms of easing, vaccination levels and so on. I do think that the government and NPHET have ignored the fact that, once travel reopens, you do have to ask yourself if the quality of life here (leaving aside with whether or not you agree with the restrictions) is significantly less than elsewhere, large amounts of people won't simply up sticks.

At the moment it feels like Ireland is conducting a national experiment to see how much mental misery you can pile on people before they crack. The housing catastrophe, the lack of a functioning health service, the involvement of an organisation which tolerated paedophilia and babies buried in septic tanks in education, the small-mindedness and curtain-twitching that has taken hold, the businesses destroyed, the national debt, the vilification of anyone who dares to question NPHET. I know of 2 people leaving and will go myself if things aren't improved soon. But I haven't seen a single article nor news programme about this anywhere.

I agree. To me the Ireland I knew is gone forever. And what is even more sad is that most people are literally biting at the bit to keep it slowly descending into totalitarianism. You're unlikely to get much of a response to your post. They can't see it and are happy to witter on about trivial shite when their country is now totally destroyed. Shame.

I am so utterly disappointed with the curtain twitching and people asking if you've been vaccinated before they invite you anywhere. And I so utterly utterly gutted that there now is this having to show proof of vaccination to enter a pub or restaurant.
People who havent been offered the vaccine, who cant take it for medical reasons or just have their own concerns so have freely chosen not to take a covid vaccine, are now all being refused goods and services. Leo said he hopes this discrimination isnt seen as discrimination.

crapshow · 19/07/2021 15:48

He'd do well to look up "discrimination" in the dictionary. My heart bleeds at what has become of this country. I used to be proud to be Irish. Now I am ashamed and embarrassed.

Thing is, with the UK irresponsibly opening up, and travel now open you potentially face a situation where Ireland has to go back into some form of lockdown without ever getting say full opening.
At times you'd wonder if there is any political appetite for doing what is needed to be normal. It's like at some level NPHET want another lockdown, & there's this weird lack of protest from the public or pressure to take a different path

Where is better ? No time for people who can but won't take the vaccine. It is utterly selfish to let everyone else take the risk for them
Ireland has a lot of problems but so do most countries and it has one of the most generous benefit systems in the world
Health service - have you actually had cause to use it ? As when I speak to people who have actually needed it they say it was brilliant
Worst thing about this country is the one thing that can't be changed, the weather.
Once they sort out housing, which will take years to fix it will actually be a pretty great place to live I think.

Following from accross the water... I can't understand why the floodgates are now open to us Brits to enter without restriction from today yet you're not allowed indoor dining... Does your govt know we are are the 3rd worst country in the world? Hoping to visit family at some point so watching from afar but I sympathise with you guys.. Our situation is dire over here too with freedom day...

The HSE is on it's knees, patients waiting years to be seen and often then knocking them off lists,

patients who have had heart attacks dying in the back of ambulances while they're being driven from their local regional hospital to another city hours away because their local cath lab is only open Monday to Friday from 9am - 5pm,

waiting 5 hours for an ambulance when the doctor deems it a priority case and then having to wait for hours in the ambulance outside A&E until there's a free cubicle then another 7.5 hours to be treated,

as for mental health services - absolutely shocking, no wonder suicide rates are huge.

If you pay then you get great service, seen within a couple of weeks after being referred, choose a date/time that suits you if you need treatment.

I agree that restrictions in Ireland have been really very harsh and I am disgusted by how the media and authorities have utterly terrified people and caused them to turn on one another. I see my elderly parents and their relatives of a similar age are now shadows living in fear glued to the news absolutely obsessed with the virus despite being vaccinated. I do not see the same level of fear in people I know of the same age here in the UK, although admittedly this country is high on the bonkers scale and the NHS is also in turmoil 🙄. The vaccine passport is not unique to Ireland, this is going to be a requirement in most countries in the EU and likely in the UK eventually it's already been threatened for clubs and larger venues. So while I understand the desire to leave not sure where things are going to be any different.

I think Ireland is so cautious in it's approach that it risks going around in circles, opening up so slowly that by the time they do a new variant is around the corner and we have to shut down again..
We are planning on going to another European country for half a year, we had planned this anyway but have to agree re the attitude of some. We were shouted at a couple of times by locals here to go home when with our kids within a 5km distance of our house because they knew we weren't from there Hmm
Genuinely believe some ppl didn't mind lockdowns as it very much suited some jobs. Me and dh are convinced the school will shut again.... especially come winter..

JaneJeffer · 21/07/2021 22:52

I don't agree with the vaccination passport whatsoever. I've had mine but I respect the right of others to decide for themselves.
