Customs question

I ordered some stuff from Nip and Fab as they had 40% off. So on the email receipt that they sent me it gives the price as £59 and then the discount and the total as £35. It's coming through Address Pal and they have charged me VAT on €70. Shouldn't they be charging me VAT on €40 or do they ignore discounts and always charge on what the full price should be and not the actual price paid.

It's just out of interest as obviously my only two choices are pay whatever they want or have it returned to the seller, there's no way to ask them a question.

Thinking about it, is the 'value' different from 'amount paid'? They may consider the full price of an item to be its value and therefore that's what I pay VAT on.

How much was was delivery? They usually charge VAT on the total paid of item cost + delivery.

But if the company has put the value on the invoice as £59 then that's what AdressPal will use. Can you get in contact with them showing the email receipt for £35?

There is a general contact for AddressPal addresspal.anpost.ie/contact-us

It was free delivery inside the UK. This is what the receipt looks like, I think they looked at the top figure but not the total.

Query it - nothing to lose.

I might, if only for clarity on whether the 'value' is the original price or the price that I actually paid.

However I'm still in credit on balance as a result of Address Pal errors, I ordered quilting fabric from the US which cost me $110, there was no enclosed receipt so someone who has no clue about quilting obviously opened the package and made a wild guess at a value of €30. Grin

It doesn't look good for Address Pal though, I've done four deliveries through them. One was from the UK before Brexit, so no duty. One was from the US, but it was a book so no VAT due, they got that one right. And then two that they got wrong. Not very impressive.

The parcel has arrived and I know why they charged me what they did. There was no receipt in the box so they obviously looked it up on the website, which was after the offer had finished so they saw full price. So from their point of view the right charge was applied.

The figure of £59.85 was a vat inclusive figure so the net price of the item should have been £49.87.

Hence the invoice total of £35.91 this is a net figure of £29.92.

I don't think that custom charges ever allow for foreign taxes, you just have to suck up paying VAT on foreign VAT. It would be hideously complicated otherwise.
