Just watching Maura and Daithi (how has my life come to this?!) and there's an Archbishop on, talking about the saRRcraments. I've noticed most RC priests do this. Where did the extra R sound sneak in? Did they teach them this in the seminary? It drives me insane (and not just nowadays, it always has). I want to stand up in church and scream "it rhymes with BACK, not BARK - SACKrament, not SARKrament".

Thank you. As you were!! Grin

I hear you. God knows where it comes from, but my MIL, who is married to a Patrick, invariably pronounces his name PARRtrick. Similarly St PARRtrick’s day etc. I mean, they’re been married over 50 years and she mispronounces his name!

‘SARRcraments’ makes me want to shout ‘Sac!’ As in ‘Back, sac and crack!’ Grin

Maybe it’s the priest version of “veh-hickle” for guards.

Parrtrick!!! 😂😂😂 That's so funny (and massively annoying!).

That’s exactly what it is. Perhaps there could be a mispronunciation cluster — do priests drive around in Sarrcramental Veh-ickles?

Easy way to interview for both professions - just hold up a flashcard with the relevant word on it, if they mispronounce it, they're in!!

Lots of old school teachers do this too! I like it. It makes absolutely no sense but gives me a sort of rush of warmth towards Ireland in general for some reason.

But then I’ve also got a soft spot for people who say their daughter has emigrated to Chicarrrgo😊

Ooh and another is “badatoes” instead of potatoes. Class!

In fairness I bet God does.

God should make the communion host light up with flashing letters reading I AM NOT A SARRCRAMENT!!!

I had a lecturer who was2nd or 3rd generation Irish American. He was from Chicarrrrrrrgo...also a priest. I'll leave that there.

Ha, so it IS a priest thing! Chicarrrrgo is brilliant - I'd forgotten that one!
