What in the name of god is going on there?
I sent a package from UK in October that took almost a month. It was only delivered after questions were asked as to whereabouts.
No.2 package sent via Hermes from UK on 9th December still hasn't arrived. Hermes told me they had handed it on to An Post a week before Christmas.
I read somewhere of a letter posted in Dublin to an address IN Dublin which took A MONTH to arrive.
Is An Post now officially unfit for purpose?
Heres the kicker....
A package posted in UK arrived IN JAPAN in 8 days.

We got a letter yesterday postmarked 21st December - we're in the same province Shock
Perhaps staff numbers are depleted due to Covid19 ?

CherryValanc · 12/01/2021 20:20

Dont know, but I've had very little through the door recently. Last thing was a Christmas card from the UK. The Royal Mail post mark was 15 December.

There's a limit to understanding that they have had a high volume of post and fewer staff so things are going slower. I think a lot of people are at that limit.

I'm wondering if they are quarantine things at several stages of the process!!

It's a combination of Covid (and Brexit on UK items). A relative is a postman, they had just one case of Covid in his depot over the entire Mar-Nov period, but have been decimated since mid-Dec. There are 5 guys currently out and he's heard of another depot with 12 out. Add the insane volumes of parcels to that mix and there's the explanation.

ASnowman · 13/01/2021 00:11

I posted a parcel today and asked if they thought there would be a delay. They said yes as there has been a covid outbreak in the sorting office and one postman told them they expect it to be Easter before all the Christmas post is delivered! Shock I should've asked before handing over the parcel. I could have sent it by courier.

I got a Christmas card this morning post marked 15th December! It was posted in Ireland. I'd say they were concentrating on the parcels and there must have been a crazy amount of parcels this year. And it's not as simple as saying take on extra staff because you have to ensure that the staff can remain a safe distance from each other in the sorting offices. I can't get het up about a late Christmas card in the middle of a pandemic, but I can appreciate that it would be frustrating if you're waiting for something important.

Yes, looks to be a combination of things.

Article from Irish Times from Monday:

Expect overseas Christmas mail throughout January, says An Post
Parcels from overseas could land this month as companies try to clear Covid-19 backlogs

People have been told they can expect to be receiving Christmas cards and presents from friends and family overseas throughout January while festive mail sent abroad is facing similar delays as delivery companies worldwide work to clear Covid-19 related backlogs.

An Post has warned that restrictions caused by the pandemic as well as local lockdowns across the world are still having an impact on the distribution and delivery of international parcels and letters.

It said the number of international flights continues to be severely impacted by the crisis, with only limited space available for international letters and parcels.

As a result, many items posted in Ireland during December for delivery across the world are still in transit through airports and sea ports while local delivery depots across the globe have been impacted by Covid with some areas are also dealing with severe winter weather conditions.

In a statement An Post said it expected to be receiving incoming international Christmas parcels and letters for delivery in Ireland throughout January. “We assure customers that we continue to deliver all international letters and parcels as soon as they are received into Ireland,” a spokeswoman said.

Brexit is also causing a headache for delivery companies with the addition of significant volumes of red tape and form filling as a result of the UK’s departure from the EU at the start of the year.

DPD said last week it has paused deliveries from the Britain to Ireland as a result of Brexit logjams. An Post has expressed confidence that it will be able to overcome Brexit hurdles as it works to deliver as many as 16 million parcels into Ireland this year.

We're in West Cork and apparently the Cork sorting office was shut and everything comes through Portlaoise now. The woman in our local post office said they ran out of vans before Christmas so stuff was just sitting there for days!

rivierliedje · 13/01/2021 21:41

Still getting christmas cards every few days here and packages in and out of the country still not arrived.

123MothergotafleA · 14/01/2021 10:18

Just heard that package could arrive "within three working days", so next week then!! which will be 5 weeks.

An Post seem to be doing Hermes deliveries which is probably clogging up the system too. I got something today which was despatched on 13th December!

gabsdot45 · 18/01/2021 23:31

I posted parcels from Dublin to addresses in kildare last Wednesday afternoon and they arrived on Thursday.
In early December the same parcels took a week to get there.
My sisters Christmas card took a month to get to Denmark.
I think an post were very overwhelmed before Christmas

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/01/2021 23:35

I was a bit worried about DS's prescription which has to be posted, but it arrived the next day so I think they are prioritising letters over cards and parcels. I have definitely had some things arrive quite late but bills appear to be getting through just fine. Hmm

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 19/01/2021 15:35

I posted a card to an aunt in US 2nd week in November and she messaged me yesterday to say it had arrived!! Not sure if that's due to An Post or whoever looks after the US mail.

But I'm really pissed off as I posted a card on Friday to another part of the country. Asked if there was any way for it to get there quicker. Was told I could pay extra for next day delivery. It was €10! (this was a card, being posted to the West of Ireland) So I paid it. Bloody card didn't arrive until today. Total waste of money. Rant over.

It has to be Covid causing the problems? I know An Post have been inundated with parcels since they took the Amazon contract 2 years ago but I'd imagine a lot of people (like myself) have stopped buying from Amazon due to Brexit. I just really hope they sort it out asap and don't use it as a bloody excuse for ever more.
