Can anyone recommend a Dublin hairdresser that specialises/has lots of experience with mixed race hair?

DD has the most gorgeous hair, but it's very hard to manage. She is part Asian, part European and part Black Caribbean. Her hair is incredibly thick and heavy, it takes hours to dry after being washed. It's also quite curly and has a tendency to become matted. For years she preferred it short, like boy short, and we just took her to a barbers, but now she's growing it and it's shoulder length. Neither she nor I really know how to care for it and the other day I spent 40 minutes trying to get the matts out and only managed to sort out about half of them. I really think she ought to be doing things like putting it in a pony tail before sleeping or perhaps using a silk hair wrap, but she won't listen to me. She could also use some advice on what products would work for her.

Cant advise you about a specialist hairdresser; but one of my DDs has lots of friends whose parents are African, Nigerian mostly.
In my city, lots of specialist hairdressers have sprung up and I hear from DD about the different concerns her friends have in relation to their hair. (A special treat seems to be, to have curls relaxed, so that the hair is straight.)

Perhaps, ask advice from a hairdresser that is close to a girls Secondary School?

Mines kinda like hers, have a look at the curly girl method because it's a good starting place but I'm not religious about it. My daughter is less black but her hair is like a rats nest every single morning so I have to do two heads now.

I use TRESemme Botanique Nourish Smooth Hydrating And Moisturising Conditioner because it's very very slippery and silicone free. The slip is important for getting the tangles out, I had to try a few before finding one slippy enough.

I don't have a shampoo I like anymore but have a look on Reddit for curly hair product recommendations and pick something, I'm using faith in nature atm and I get though it way faster than my now discontinued favourite. I only shampoo when my hair/scalp is getting gross, once or twice a week, shampoo is too drying to use regularly.

A wide toothed comb is best for detangling without damage, avoid brushes as much as possible and never brush or comb it dry. Start at the ends and work up slowly. Follow with a fine comb to make sure you got it all.

Boots curl creme is a staple product for a lot of curlies.

I don't do silk wraps or pillows but do tie my hair up every night otherwise it's a nightmare.

I went to a curly hairdresser but I'm cutting my own hair atm, I've had lots of practice over the years and it grows fast so mishaps don't last long. I need to cut layers fairly short (not super short!) so it's not like a heavy triangle.

Thanks for the responses.

I think I will have to get some wide-toothed combs, I was using a Tangle Teaser on her while her hair was short, but it just can't cope with the huge mass that her hair is now. And I'll give that conditioner a go. She doesn't actually need to wash her hair very often although that may change as the teen hormones do their thing. I'll give the Tresemme conditioner a go too.

I'll get her to ask her friends/classmates when she's back at school Fiona, I'm not sure that there is anyone with quite the same hair as her but there should be a range of experiences. We can't go to the hairdressers for a while anyway, I'm cutting her hair myself at the moment and am very glad that curly hair is so forgiving as I'm not very good at it. Grin

Have heard great things about this salon I want to bring DD but we're waaay more than 5k from it!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/12/2020 20:16

Thanks LifeInAHamsterWheel that looks interesting. We'd have to go North of the river though. Shock I'm also a bit worried that they have quite a strict regime before you get there, including removing all tangles which is the very thing that we're having the most trouble with.

Ahhh is it weird that I'd loved to have a go at her hair? Would be very satisfying but would likely take a while and kill my arms and fingers a bit.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/12/2020 00:31

Weirdo! Grin She wouldn't sit still enough so it would be very tiresome, and the matting is really formidable.

Lifeinahamsterwheel beat me to it!! DSis goes there and is thrilled even though it takes ages to get an appointment and it always requires annual leave to be used. He's amazing apparently and the place next door has gorgeous coffee if you're waitingGrin
