Help with Irish name, please

I'm looking for some help with an irish girl's name starting with 'S' from anyone who is knowledgeable in such things, please.
Is there a name that would be pronounced either 'sore-sha' or 'seer-sha'?

I know of Sorcha and Saoirse, but I understand they're pronounced slightly differently to the above. Any help would be much appreciated.

They are two very different names. But your phonetic pronunciation is about right for Saoirse. For Sorcha, there is more variation. I'd say it as: Sor-a-ka.

Check this out: forvo.com/word/sorcha/

I'd say that depending on dialect/pronunciation Saoirse would be either 'sore-sha' or 'seer-sha' - I'd say the latter (west coast reared, living in dublin)
To me, Sorcha would be 'sork-ah' but could also be 'sore-sha'

Nara2k · 25/12/2020 20:14

Actually sor-a-ka is probably closer to my pronunciation too :)

Nyancat · 25/12/2020 20:23

I'm up north and sorcha and saoirse would be pronounced up here by a lot of people the way you have written them.

RedLimoncello · 25/12/2020 20:26

I’m from the west and would say seersha for Saoirse and Suraka (but with a softer k) for Sorcha but have heard Sorcha pronounced Sore-sha more frequently.

Yes but they’re completely wrong on the Sorcha front. I’m also from NI and it’s one of those cringeworthy mistakes that’s made by a lot of people. Sorcha should be suraka. Saoirse is seersha.
Sorchamarie · 26/12/2020 07:31

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the help. Saoirse is definitely the name I'm after then.

Not disputing that Lavinia Kerwick is a very brave woman but what has she got to go with the thread?

TheCrystalShip · 26/12/2020 14:22

Wow, something really strange has happened with my posting ending in the wrong place. I'm 100% new to MN. I meant to post on a different thread.

TheCrystalShip · 26/12/2020 14:25

Is there any way I can delete those posts? I could click the REPORT button maybe to ask to admin to delete?

TheCrystalShip · 26/12/2020 14:28

I just reported to MN and asked them to remove them.

I assume this relates to the 15% Irish Times piece. I do remember LK being on the late late in the last year or two. Very interesting speaker!

Aerielview · 28/12/2020 11:19

Depending on what part of the country you're from, Sorcha can be pronounced either Sor-ka or Sor-sha.
Saoirse is pronounced Seer-sha...unless of course you're Saoirse Ronan who seems to have developed some sort of affected pronunciation of the name to make herself sound more unique...

Cinderella2020 · 28/12/2020 11:29

Does Saorise Ronan pronounce it differently? I thought so she pronounced it Seer-Sha?

SionnachRua · 28/12/2020 12:15

She rhymes it with inertia.

harrietm1987 · 28/12/2020 13:45

It’s so frustrating. I’m in London and know a couple of English families who have named their child Saoirse pronounced sersha thanks to Ms Ronan 🤦‍♀️
LadyEloise · 28/12/2020 14:13

I think Seersha first but then Saresha comes into my mind.

MaLarkinn · 30/12/2020 10:50

I have an Irish name beginning with S Wink

gabsdot45 · 02/01/2021 17:58

Saoirse is the Gaelige word for freedom
Sorcha is Gaelige for Sarah. Sorcha is my favourite girls name.

LadyEloise · 02/01/2021 19:55

@MaLarkinn
Is it
Sinéad
Siobhán
Sorcha
Saoirse
Sibéal
Síofra

??????

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 03/01/2021 23:52

Could it be Seoirse that you are thinking about? Gaeilge for George and pronounced Shohr-sheh.
