Bread sauce - is it just a Proddy thing?

Long version - my DM (Prod) has always served bread sauce with Christmas dinner when I was a child. Sometimes we would go to Dad's side of the family (Catholic) for Christmas dinner and I can't remember clearly whether we had bread sauce then or not, but I think we did. Certainly when they came to us there weren't any comments about Mum serving bread sauce, but perhaps they were being polite.

This morning DH was shopping in Dunnes and there was no bread sauce, I wanted fresh but would have accepted packet mix, but nothing at all. He asked a couple of employees but they had never heard of it, however they weren't Irish so it could just be something that they're not aware of.

DH (Asian, so thinks a sauce made from bread is weird and unnecessary) was on a video chat with his friend when I walked into the room and he told me that he couldn't find it. His friend (Irish Catholic) had no idea what bread sauce was either, he's the one that suggested it's a Proddy thing. When I thought about it I realised that I had only ever bought fresh bread sauce from M&S, so imported into Ireland, but I still feel like I've seen packet bread sauce around in other places too.

So, which is it?
a) Everyone knows and uses bread sauce
b) It's just for Protestants
c) Condiments don't have a religious affiliation
d) Only a slattern would buy it instead of making it herself.

And Middlesex atheist if that helps!

BlueBoar · 23/12/2020 16:35

NI prod - bread sauce all the way (often have it with roast chicken on sundays too).

Voting wise, D 😂

Almostslimjim · 23/12/2020 16:36

c) I hadn't had bread sauce until I was 34! It's really nice.

TheFlis12345 · 23/12/2020 16:41

C of E from SE England. My family are not bread sauce fans but certainly know about it. I remember having it with roast chicken at a friend’s house when I was young and loving it! I usually make a small batch just for me at Christmas.

Southern catholic and it wouldn't be Christmas without bread sauce!

FlamedToACrisp · 23/12/2020 16:45

Brought up Methodist from SE England. Dad insisted on bread sauce, but we all disliked it.

User27aw · 23/12/2020 16:45

My Irish Catholic mum (now in england) always makes it for xmas dinner/roast chicken dinner

SionnachRua · 23/12/2020 16:45

@WhatKatyDidNxt

Haha interesting theory Xmas Hmm. My mums family are mad on it (English Protestants). Ex husbands family (Irish catholics) didn’t understand pigs in blankets which confuses me massively. Who doesn’t love pigs in blankets?!
I'd never heard of pigs in blankets before I joined MN. Catholic raised Dubliner here, we had bread sauce on the table at Christmas but I can't remember anyone using much of the stuff!

Bread Sauce is the greatest sauce - I'm C of E.

IHateCoronavirus · 23/12/2020 16:49

Irish catholic child of the 80’s raised in NW of England. We had it on bacon and cabbage. In fact that is pretty much all we were fed on. That and bread dipped in tea Envy [not envy]

FairyontopofthetreeBatman · 23/12/2020 16:50

Catholic and Prod halves of my family both have it so no dice.

It is however one of the most vile foodstuffs ever invented so Envy (not envy)

BelfastMaOf2 · 23/12/2020 16:54

Belfast prod and never ever had it, didn't even know it was a thing until recent years! Just asked DP (also belfast, also prod) and he never had it either!

Nat6999 · 23/12/2020 16:55

Bread sauce is essential no matter what religion you are. We have 2 huge bowls between 3 of us & there won't be any left, Ds is happy to finish it off after dinner.

ClinkyMonkey · 23/12/2020 16:55

I was brought up a Prod in a mixed marriage. Never heard of bread sauce until I was an adult. I am clearly much more knowledgeable about this than yer average Prod, considering my mixed heritage and I officially declare it 'an English thing'Grin. It sounds rotten, but I'm always prepared to be proved wrong.

Disclaimer: I'm now an atheist, so perhaps my opinion counts for nought.

CorianderQueen · 23/12/2020 16:59

Don't think so, I don't know anyone who grew up eating it to be honest (Protestant English).

I think it's something that 1/30 families serves.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 23/12/2020 17:02

Catholic NI family, nothing says Christmas like the smell of an onion stuck with cloves simmering in milk getting ready for the bread sauce. Which is vile, but the prep stage smells heavenly.

You've just reminded me I have no onion to boil my Christmas ham 😮 wonder are the greengrocer open tomorrow.

Ramblingwords · 23/12/2020 17:04

Mum is an Irish prod. Dad Scottish but with English parents. My memory is that dad always complained that mum didn’t include bread sauce in Xmas dinner. So I’ve always thought of it as English thing.

SelfIcellation · 23/12/2020 17:04

Midlands lapsed CofE now atheist here. Wasn't served in my family. London atheist family on DH's side, not served there either.

lockeddownandcrazy · 23/12/2020 17:04

Gotta have a home made bread sauce - not a full dinner without it - and i'm and atheist

Hollyhobbi · 23/12/2020 17:05

Well my very Catholic Mass going mum from Cork City always makes it on Christmas day. I've made it a few times myself but I'm the only one who likes it so I don't make it any more. She has an old recipe from the cookbook she had for home economics in secondary school about 60 years ago that she uses for it.

Lordamighty · 23/12/2020 17:05

BlackAmericanoNoSugar I think the priest was in favour of the home made version but thought the packet stuff was a poor substitute, which is true.
Quite how he related that to God I really can’t remember, it was very light hearted though.

Hollyhobbi · 23/12/2020 17:06

I'm a lapsed Catholic like everyone else in Ireland under 60ish😂.

TheSpottedZebra · 23/12/2020 17:07

I'd have thought Prod, but Delia does it and she is Very Catholic.

Toomuchleopard · 23/12/2020 17:08

I make bread sauce and I’m from Yorkshire and of no religion. The Delia recipe is lovely. Sounds minging but amazing with Christmas dinner.

30not13 · 23/12/2020 17:09

English living in Scotland and DP and family had never heard of it. It us freely available in Asfa etcthough so not sure why not. They also didnt know about rum or brandy white sauce for xmas pud either heathens I've converted them :)
