Practicalities of a no deal Brexit for Ireland

During the summer I read an article by Dan O'Brien, not known for scaremongering, recommending that in the republic we should consider stockpiling a few weeks worth of pasta, flour, etc because of supply chain issues with Brexit. This evening I've just seen they've put a pause on the negotiations, which doesn't bode well for a deal.

I've just cleared a lot of space in the attic usually occupied by the Christmas decorations, I'm thinking I should use it to stockpile! What would you stock up on?

I also got an email from eBay a couple of weeks ago saying that I'll have to start paying tax on goods from the U.K., and charging tax if you sell to the U.K. and I assume that other goods bought online will be the same.

We are north of the border but have been keeping a few weeks supplies since covid kicked off.

I'm a general prepper in the UK (dual Irish/UK citizen). All I would suggest is to focus on things you actually eat. And be realistic about what your budget, storage space and emotional health can tolerate.

And I'm really so fucking sorry that you are being put in this situation.

I think flour would be a good one, at the beginning of the COVID lockdown there was a severe shortage of flour, it took a few months to get back to normal. Apparently we don't mill our own flour here.

Some small mills here, who were run off their feet at the start of Covid- such Kells

I'll be stocking up on batteries, bulbs, dry and tinned foods, Kelloggs for kids weekends.
With Covid, I've switched to Neighbourfood for a lot of fresh stuff, I'm lucky to have one within 30mins drive.

I saw the headline about the stall in negotiations, again, (grrrrr) and I'm going to change my Amazon a/c to Germany because they have an English language option; or I might risk my school french on the France site. (not that I buy much from Amazon the small shop wreckers).

I just got an e-mail from Amazon saying that there could be some changes as a result of Brexit. It says,

"These changes could include:

We will continue to accept eligible returns. If the reason for return is the result of an error (e.g. if the item is defective / damaged / incorrect), any costs incurred for the return will be paid by Amazon. Otherwise, any costs incurred for the return (including transport costs, as well as any associated import fees or customs where applicable) will be payable by the person returning the goods <a class="break-all" href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/returnshelp."?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-craicnet-4098001-practicalities-of-a-no-deal-brexit-for-ireland" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.amazon.co.uk/returnshelp."

Generally speaking, I don't order a huge amount from Amazon although I did order a fair bit during the first lockdown, because so many shops were closed here. I did my best to order Christmas presents from Irish retailers - either online or using click and collect.

Anyway, there's not enough detail in the e-mail to determine if it will cost extra to order from Amazon going forward and if so, how much extra? Also, I think I read that Amazon are setting up warehouses here. Will there be an amazon.ie?

In work earlier I opened mail from the bank informing that name of company times 5 are all with UK banks and to contact them suppliers and make sure they have our address correct and in full because our direct debits will not go out from 31st Dec unless the supplier, upon wishing to take the funds, can provide all of our details.

Such a feckin mess. Honestly Britain you baffle me. This is only the start of it.

Pickledpenguin · 08/12/2020 18:32

I would buy in some flour although Odlums do still mill here but for strong and plain flour it is brought in from the north so that will be an issue, same as yeast in fact so possibly buy some of that in too.

Apileofballyhoo · 08/12/2020 18:44

I'm buying/have bought rice, pasta, bread, flour, pasta sauce, frozen veg, tinned fruit, toilet roll, kitchen roll, soap, toothpaste etc.

I'm hoping things will be ok after 3 or 4 weeks.

Does anyone know how I can switch amazon account to the Germany version without a German address?

AfterSchoolWorry · 08/12/2020 19:54

Fuck, whats gonna go wrong wth Amazon?

AfterSchoolWorry · 08/12/2020 19:56

I mean why would we need a French or German one?

Taytocrisps · 08/12/2020 19:58

@AfterSchoolWorry I posted earlier about an e-mail I received from Amazon and there's an article about it here www.rte.ie/news/business/2020/1208/1183200-amazon-brexit/

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/12/2020 20:26

You don't need a German address. They ship to Ireland. Only difference is there is no free postage.

Thank you. I had been using the amazon app so logged into German amazon via browser. Is free prime postage only linked to the .co.uk Amazon? Foolish of me not to think that brexit was going to affect beyond medicines!

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/12/2020 20:59

@dumpling123 - Germany do the free postage over a certain spend but only to Germany and Austria. I don't know about prime but I suspect it's the same. I ordered something from Germany a couple of months ago and I think the postage was €8.
