Wow that is scary! It is so different from my real life experience. As a student (a long long time ago) one of my house mates//friends was raped (according to our landlady when I met her many years later). Also, one of colleagues more recently on work trip.

Hopefully this is not an accurate sample!!

Honestly, I think it’s vastly underestimated Sad

What sex is doing the taping?

MadamBatty · 25/11/2020 22:05

Raping?

Tartyflette · 25/11/2020 22:07

Huh? And which sex is being raped most?

Cismyfatarse · 25/11/2020 22:10

15% of adults.

That must be about 30% of women as there are few male rape victims.

100% of the rapists will be men.

A shocking level of violence visited on women and girls. Really shocking.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/11/2020 22:15

The researchers found that one in five women have been raped – defined as vaginal, anal or oral penetration – in their lifetime, compared with one in 10 men.

And
The prevalence of sexual violence varied “significantly” between men and women, the report states, with 49 per cent of women and 19 per cent of men reported being sexually assaulted or harassed.

A few people here know me in real life, and know the area I work in. I have no idea if this average number is correct. But from my limited perspective sure there is more reporting, more investigation, more services call on, etc. today than in the past. That does not mean less happened in the past. There are MANY cases reported in the past years of historical abuse in sports/hobby, educational, religious, settings .. these would not have been reported historically (or if reported in Ireland, would not have been investigated).

In all my years, I have never been involved a case where the suspect was a woman (but I am aware of a small few).

I am no longer surprised by all this (I used to be).

This doesn't come as a surprise to me either. I know many stories of rape in families, teachers, people in positions of responsibility and people who 'everyone knew were odd and children should stay away from'. None of these were ever reported yet much was made of 'false repressed memories' and I despair every time I hear 'you can't believe everything that person says', 'there is too much water under the bridge' and 'what good would come of it now'.

Not a total surprise. A hugely unreported crime in Ireland (speaking from experience)

SineOfTheThymes · 25/12/2020 15:45

It could be accurate I guess? I know that there is a better understanding of what is considered rape these days. I'd certainly known of many cases of coercive sex in college days (of course I'd only have heard one side, but have not reason to doubt it).

Maybe it's on my radar more too, since I also remember as a teenager that a student girl lodger (called digs back in the day!) in the house next door was seriously sexually assaulted/raped (not exactly sure) in the nearby college campus by stranger. The landlady told the neighbors in the park/group of houses., and we were super watchful as a result

@SineOfTheThymes, showing my age here, but back in the 80s things like this were just never reported. Thankfully things have moved on.
