Hi!
My dad's mum was Irish, and according to the Irish passport and citizenship website, he is already an Irish citizen because of this and gives the option to apply for a passport. But would he still need to be registered as a foreign birth?

You can apply through a grandparent anyway.

gingercatsarebest · 17/10/2020 20:41

Oh sorry do u mean for you or your dad?

Suzysleep · 17/10/2020 20:47

Yes he needs to register himself as a foreign birth if he wasn't born in Ireland. He'll then be entitled to citizenship and a passport.

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz123 · 17/10/2020 20:47

It's for my dad, not me 😊
So I'm guessing he has to apply as a foreign birth first, and then apply for a passport.
Wish the website was more clear 😅

You should apply to in order to keep passing it down. my dad was exactly in your dad's position but he never applied to be on the register and has now passed. .I could get irish passport through my grandparents but I don't think my daughter could. ..If I read it correct.,its complicated!

Aaahhhbump · 17/10/2020 21:01

He can apply directly for a passport.

However you would need to be on the foreign Birth register.

If your parent born on the island of Ireland, you are already a citizen and you only need a certified copy if their birth certificate in order to apply for an Irish passport.

In order to claim citizenship through a grandparent, you need to first br registered as a foreign birth then apply for a passport.

He doesn't need to be registered as a foreign birth to get a passport. You would though , if you wanted to apply for a passport.

I don't need an Irish passport. He doesn't either (he's not British, this isn't a Brexit escape plan lol). We are Italian. But I know it would mean a lot to him to have Irish citizenship. He's very proud of his heritage (speaks Gaelic, plays Irish music always, loves soda bread lol 😉) so if I could help him do this it would mean a great deal! 😊

He’s Italian but he speaks Irish? Impressive Papa!

My mother’s mother was from Northern Ireland but was sent to England to give birth a and the child (mum) given up for adoption. So mum was born in England and raised by an English adoptive mother. But both her parents came from N. Ireland. Is mum eligible for an Irish passport?

babasaclover · 18/10/2020 20:12

I would love some advice on this. Would like to get one for my daughter (grandchild of Irish) website is a nightmare. How do you register a foreign birth abroad in England

FinallyHere · 18/10/2020 21:11

Yes

If she doesn't already have a copy, would need to apply for official copy of her mother's birth certificate then apply for the passport.

"If you or your parent were born on the island of Ireland before 2005, you are an Irish citizen. You can apply for an Irish passport without making an application for citizenship."

Good luck

Registering a foreign birth:

CherryPavlova · 18/10/2020 21:17

I had to provide details of my father but didn’t have to register as foreign birth as my father was born, raised and lived in Ireland.
My children did need certificates of registration of foreign birth to gain their citizenship.
The embassy were incredibly helpful as my father had already died and I didn’t have paperwork.

Just been through the process for my daughter - got her on the foreign birth register and then got passports for all of us. A bit laborious but not difficult to do.
