Where do you buy yours? I had one from Centra but it was a bit dry.

I've had 2 nice ones this year, didn't know the price of either until I paid Grin the first was €1 from dunnes, the second was mccloskey's from supervalu & it was nearly €5 Shock tbh it's got too many cherries but it's nice & fresh.
Most are better for being toasted.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 16/10/2020 14:36

I make my own - using Mary Berry's 'tea bread' recipe. It's super easy to make and even easier to eat Grin I agree it's also fab toasted.

The recipe is here I just use regular tea and whatever brown sugar I have in the cupboard.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 16/10/2020 14:55

We had an Aldi Specially Selected one last week that was nice. I like the McCloskeys ones, especially their extra cherry-y edition.

I commented to DH this morning that I'm surprised they still put rings in them; I would have thought that health and safety considerations would have put an end to that by now. I'm glad it's still a thing.

Go for the tea bread.

Our most favourite bannock story is my cousin told her folks she had a "wee beaten Granny for lunch"

I've just eaten 2 slices of Tesco's 'Ghoulish Brack' (454g for €1) and it was lovely with a bit of butter spread on it. The ring was hanging out of one corner - which is not a bad thing as far as my teeth go! I made a tea brack yesterday from the Odlum's recipe, but it won't be ideal to eat until tomorrow.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 16/10/2020 17:54

@Inextremis it's ideal straight out of the oven Wink

Taytocrisps · 16/10/2020 18:04

Yes, I eat it very cautiously these days - I never had to worry about my teeth as a kid Smile. It's probably just a matter of time before someone takes a case and that will be the end of the rings.

Thanks, @LifeInAHamsterWheel, that looks like a nice recipe. I'll definitely try it out.

Juvernia · 17/10/2020 13:42

@Inextremis I had that Tesco brack last night. After reading here that brack is nicer toasted I put two slices into the toaster and came back to find it making worrying crackling, hissing and spitting sounds. I hadn't noticed that the ring was in one of them Blush
Luckily whatever kind of paper is on it didn't burn as such or we could have had an early Halloween bonfire. Lesson learned! The brack was yummy alright.

Inextremis · 17/10/2020 14:52

@Juvernia OMG! So glad nothing worse happened - am very glad I found the ring before I toasted mine.

GallopingGreen · 17/10/2020 22:15

I tried a SuperValu one this weekend. Very dry - just a weird raisin bread- definitely won't get it again.
I usually look out for Stafford's in SuperValu but haven't seen it this year yet

Procrastination4 · 21/10/2020 02:28

I bought an ABC barm brack in the English Marlet in Cork today. Absolutely delicious! It wasn’t a tea brack type but a light one made with yeast. So good!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 21/10/2020 08:58

That sounds nice, Procrastination4. The English Market is outside my 5km zone again. I'm going to try and make one during mid-term break.

upsidedown180 · 21/10/2020 17:42

Hickey's Barm Brack from Clonmel is pretty famous. In fact it featured on Mary Berry's show a few weeks back. You can buy it online and they deliver to the UK & Ireland. It's not cheap but it is delicious! hickeysbakery.com/barm-brack/

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 21/10/2020 18:39

I must look that up, upsidedown180!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 21/10/2020 20:02

I've just put fruit steeping to make Donal Skeahan's one tomorrow.

StopGo · 21/10/2020 20:06

Made Donal Skeahan's last week, truly lush so will make several more.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 21/10/2020 20:26

I'm definitely looking that up!

LadyEloise · 23/10/2020 12:11

I don't get the appeal of barm brack.
Or Christmas cake.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 23/10/2020 18:16

I left the braic to settle overnight. God it's good. Especially with a lump of avonmore butter on it.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 23/10/2020 18:44

Can't wait to try it, MotherForkinShirtBalls, though we're a Kerrygold house here ;)

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 23/10/2020 18:49

Wwe used to be kerry gold too, but it's gone a bit too salty of late. Hmm

mathanxiety · 08/11/2020 07:31

@LifeInAHamsterWheel, I add mixed spice to Mary Berry's recipe and it always comes out nice.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/11/2020 16:09

Thanks @mathanxiety I must try that
