A Covid case in a national school in Dublin already

That was pretty quick, they have sent the class home but the rest of the school is operating normally. DD is in secondary and I know that they spent the first day at school learning how to move around safely and also how to log on remotely just in case the class has to be sent home at short notice.

Does anyone know which school it is? I don't know all that many national schools with that many pupils (500) so I was wondering if it was Taney. I feel for those kids, only just back after so long away.

Holy Family National School in Rathcoole

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/09/2020 15:28

I'll keep my fingers crossed for them that it's an isolated case and hasn't spread to other pupils. DD would be gutted if she had to go back to remote learning, she's so thrilled to see all her friends again.

I know. It must be very hard on them.
I’d be hopeful, as we’re only a few days in that it’s been picked up quickly enough.

The first of many, in a couple of weeks this will be happening so often they won't even make the news. Hopefully they'll contain it, I think this year is going to be a succession of opening/closing, stop/start.

DC in secondary are getting training sessions in the various software so they'll be able to switch easily between RL and online classes. It al adds to their skills I guess.

Same in another school in Dublin.

HorseOutside · 02/09/2020 00:12

That didn't take long did it? Though it was inevitable really.

Inanutshelldaze · 02/09/2020 10:09

Has the second school in Dublin been named?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/09/2020 19:27

Lucan Community National School is the second school.

Another school announced has closed in Co Clare, announced tonighr. Staff member positive, other staff considered close contacts so the whole school is closed for a week😔

HorseOutside · 03/09/2020 01:18

Feck, that's possibly a bit close to home. I wonder whereabouts in Clare it is?

Inanutshelldaze · 03/09/2020 06:55

I read in was in East Clare, near the Limerick border, a small village school with 100 pupils

HorseOutside · 03/09/2020 20:10

I heard today it's Meelick national school, which is just where you described @Inanutshelldaze.

What actually happened was that a staff member tested positive a week before returning, and they had been in contact with a number of other staff members who were then deemed to be close contacts and had to isolate. So when the school returned last Monday, they had a number of substitutes and a few permanent staff. But then those permanent staff members were confirmed to be close contacts of another case and because there were no permanent staff members left to run the school, the HSE ordered them to close. Thankfully with the safety measures in place no students are at risk.

I think we'll be seeing lots and lots of situations like this in the coming months 🙈

Inanutshelldaze · 07/09/2020 12:05

Definitely 5 schools in Dublin last week, 1 in Meath & 3 in kerry plus the one in clare! They are only back a week😢

There is a case in a girls' school in Cork City. The principal emailed parents yesterday evening.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 08/09/2020 15:46

Have any of you seen this on twitter?

twitter.com/3mm4l0u1s3/status/1303076902593269760

She seems to be collecting data on all the schools, north and south, who have had cases linked to them. If her data is correct, it will be interesting to watch.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/09/2020 15:46

I think some schools are also being a little twitchy. My friend's niece was sent home five minutes after arriving at school because she coughed. Now admittedly it was in an area that has a cluster, but the child has hay fever and has been coughing for months, as she does every year. She takes prescription antihistamines so it's well documented.

Yes, Orange, I saw that on Twitter.

Exactly, Black. I was wondering about that too. My DD always develops a short cough with a cold.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 08/09/2020 17:43

Yes, I would like to know whether they are sending classes home for one child with symptoms, or one child with a positive test.

Because if it's symptoms there won't be a class in by October when the winter coughs and colds are going strong.

Asthmatic children are going to spend a lot of time at home if they have to get a test every time they cough Shock
