Are my 1994 Leaving Cert Results accepted to Study in the UK?

I'm in my late 40's & am seriously considering doing some sort of University Degree in the Uk.
I've lived here nearly 23 years.
My educational background consists of my Leaving Cert , where I obtained good grades & a
Level 3 in a teaching Assistant course.
In the past I've been told my Leaving Cert doesn't hold any weight here to continued studying.
I'd love to hear if anyone has any knowledge of this or advise?

I had many irish friends in university so obviously their leaving cert did count - I don't know why it wouldn't to be honest as it's the accepted equivalent.

Mydogisthebestest · 23/07/2020 10:47

Yes. The university will most likely use NARIC which is a qualifications equivalency table if there is any issue but leaving cert is pretty common. Every uni will have students with that I’m sure.

Most of my siblings and cousins went from Leaving cert straight to UK universities. Mostly as we didn't get the points for courses at home. So whoever you are speaking to is talking nonsense.

Head over to the Academic common room if you want more expert info, but from my time in the UK I recall that yes, the LC did count for university entry, but different universities could set their own equivalent LC grades that they'd accept.

It might be worth checking with the admissions office of the particular university where you're looking at doing a course. Universities everywhere are well used to taking international students from all over.

Yes, it absolutely is.

Thanks so much for all your advise.
Out of interest are the degrees obtained from Open University as accepted & accredited as any University?

It depends on the subject and employer.

OU degrees are (unjustly) not valued by some people, but it really does depend on area.

burnoutbabe · 23/07/2020 16:12

the university will want to see evidence of recent study for most courses mature students apply to. do you have anything in last year or two?

BiddyPop · 23/07/2020 16:24

Good luck with it, I know a number who went to the UK for uni with a 1994 LC.

It was a great year to do the exam!! (As it was sooooo much better than the 1993 version!!) 🤪🤣

Thisismytimetoshine · 23/07/2020 17:12

What was the difference, Biddy?

Northernsoullover · 23/07/2020 17:27

I had a level 3 qualification which technically was enough to get into university. Unfortunately it was so out of date I had to do a foundation year but in my first year there were people who had completed access courses too. I think you might have to do some form of access/foundation but your best bet is to speak to them.

Blogdog · 23/07/2020 21:59

As a fellow member of the class of 94 I thought the only difference from 1993 was that the maths curriculum had changed. Could be wrong though!

BiddyPop · 25/07/2020 21:09

I was going to say passing rather than failing maths !! 🤣🤣🤣

Wbeezer · 25/07/2020 21:13

I dont think there's generally a problem with equivalency, it's how long ago you did it that's the problem , they like you to have recent qualifications.
