Can someone explain the new Junior Cert results?

Niece got her results a couple of days ago, but half of the subjects are graded with A, B, C etc. and the other half are graded with Distinction, Higher Merit etc.
What's confused me is the Higher Level, Ordinary and Common Level.
Does Common Level equate to a Higher Level paper (even though they didn't have typical exam papers I know).
Or was it just her school that did it that way?

Anyone else get a similarly jumbled result? Apparently the JC is shifting and next year it will all be the Distinction, Higher Merit way of grading.

I think common level is the one level for that particular paper so no higher or ordinary level

Well, she has 2 Higher Merits in HL papers which seems to be 75% to 90%, so I'm willing to count those as A's, though a Distinction is 90% +, and she has 2 Higher Merits in Common Level papers.
I don't want to be a miser, but I had said £50 for every A, but she only has one A on a Higher Level paper.
How much would you give her? I never break a promise to her as she's my Godchild, but I suppose I'm trying to be fair, while not worming my way out......... Doh!

I've never heard of this common level thing.

In my day, an A1 on an ordinary level paper was only worth as much as a C3 I think on a Higher level paper (points wise).
I think £150 is fair enough is it? I hate to think of her expecting £250, and me giving her £150 will disappoint her I think.

Certain subjects are now common level, so no higher/ordinary level. The move has been towards continuous assessment & project work. Core subjects ie English, Irish & maths will stay Higher & ordinary level as this continues for leaving cert. By the sounds of it your niece did well.

GimmeAy · 24/06/2020 10:33

Will it be the same for the leaving cert then or how will the common level ones be counted for points? Or does it go back to A, B, C for every leaving cert subject?

Irish, English, Spanish, Business Studies and Science are all Higher Merits, with the first two being Higher Level Papers and the last three being Common Level papers.
She only got one A in the old A, B, C grade.
My head is melted.
She got no distinctions.
I agree she did fantastic and I'm really proud, I just knew nothing about this way of grading so I don't know how to be fair on what I've promised - i.e. £50 for every A... Confused

Sorry, she has three higher merits on the Common Level papers. Man - it's like reading a fucking riddle.

My thinking is £50 for her A and £50 each for the two Higher Merits on Higher Level Papers - that sound fair?

Ps her Mum doesn't seem much the wiser either apart from saying, you've no idea whether she got 75% or 89% - obviously 89% being an old A and 75% being an old B.
Maybe I'm making too much of this. I am hoping £150 will keep her happy.

Dd did her 'junior cert' and in her core subjects - maths, English, Irish, Spanish, she got percentages and in others it was merit/ distinction, etc.

From the sounds of it your niece did very well, especially in the stressful circumstances. If I were you I wouldn't be too nit picking over individual marks, tell her marking is different to your day but that you think she did so well and give her 150/200/ whatever your comfortable with, I'm sure she'll be delighted with it!

You are showing me up as I just made dd a cake to celebrate 😂
