RTE Home School hub is finished

Today was the last episode of the Home school hub.
DD has watched it almost every day. I got a bit emotional watching it I'll admit.
DD is in 6th class and she should be having her special school tour and graduation.

It's such a shame for her and all the other 6th class kids.
I've been so impressed with the Home school hub. It's been worth the price of the TV licence
I wish is was going on all summer.

Mine didn't like it at all so we stopped trying to watch it ages ago. It should run all summer as I know others absolutely loved it.

My children (I teach Sixth class) thought that it was babyish! Their parents have told me that, because they got all of the subjects from me over the course of the week, the (bar PE and Drama) they has enough o keep them going and didn’t bother with RTÉ hub after Easter. I was delighted to hear it! I gave my children proper English, Irish and Maths classes each day, and did solid work in History, Geography, Science, Music and Art also. In addition, we did work on the transition to secondary school for the last two weeks and are focusing on WTer Safety this week. We will be having our graduation ceremony next week and have put loads of effort into the planning of it. We’ve sent them out graduation packs and had an end-of-year mass yesterday for them, which included a lovely blessing from our priest—with whom they have built up a great rapport. I’m so glad we provided more for our Sixth class than was was on offer on RTÉ hub. It was probably fine for those pupils whose schools provided very little, but it couldn’t possibly compare with the teaching and learning going on in my class for the last eight weeks or so.

Excuse the typos. I was in a hurry and didn’t preview! They have enough; to keep; water safety; ( I really should get into the habit of previewing!)

@Procrastination4 well my daughters class teacher did a lot but my daughter wasn't overly fond of that either 😂😂😂. I know my friend lives rurally and her daughter absolutely loved school hub as she saw no other children at all and felt isolated. While obviously we weren't meeting up with people we would see people while on our daily walk or whatever so I don't think mine felt as isolated. I think it was a fabulous idea and while mine are odd as anything and didn't like it I think thousands of children enjoyed it.

My children loved the homeschool hub but they're 1st class & senior infants. Older dc very tearful yesterday when it finished.
They are also enjoying the Cula 4 ar scoil, took them a while to get into it but I persevered & they love it now!

Actually that was a valid point about the younger children. At least my class would have been able to do the work I set them without the help of their parents, and the lessons I recorded were as we would have done them in class with the whiteboard, powerpoints (made and narrated by me) vocabulary in Irish, etc. Younger children wouldn’t be able to do that. However, my nephew got so much to do (Junior Infants) from his teacher via Seesaw, he didn’t have the time to watch RTÉ as well!

SparkyBlue · 21/06/2020 13:47

@Procrastination4 your poor nephew that sounds terrible

Procrastination4 · 21/06/2020 14:22

Yes, his mum found it very tough going at the end. Our school didn’t go down the seesaw route. We gave a bit of English, Irish and Maths each day, plus one other subject. At this stage though, I think everyone is glad things are drawing to a close. I really hope schools can go back to “normal” in September. “Distance Learning” is painful for everyone. And how could you expect children to stay away from each other, especially in the younger classes, indefinitely? It also isn’t practical to expect teachers to be able to teach from the top of the room. That might work in 3rd level or secondary school. Not in primary, though!

That teacher sounds super over enthusiastic for a junior infants teacher. Last year I was pregnant sick and miserable and then had a premature baby in neo natal and my daughters senior infant teacher chose not to send the homework folder home for a few weeks as she said the last thing we needed was to be doing homework in the evenings on top on top of everything . I really appreciated it and to me that's a good teacher. I think why the rte hub programme was good was that it kept a lot of children engaged without feeling under pressure . There was no work to be handed in. I do think they could have kept it running longer and as it was so successful I'd like to see some type of spin off from it. Some fabulous stuff on cbbc in the mornings with operation ouch and the like.
