Colouring pencils mid 1980s

Hi can anyone help me remember the type of colouring pencils which were very popular in early to mid 1980s, I think they were an Irish brand.

I seem to recall a white pack with a small tray inside, their unique selling point was that if you dipped then in water they looked like paint. I have a vague memory of Don Conroy using them on one of the tv shows that was on after Bosco in the afternoons. Google isn't helping me with this.

Is this a figment of my imagination or can anyone help me out with the brand. Thanks in advance for your help.

I still have mine. I’ll try and find them.

wonkylegs · 12/06/2020 13:37

I had (still have but not same pack) some Derwent watercolour pencils

bigmove2020 · 12/06/2020 13:39

I remember those

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 12/06/2020 13:54

That's great. I was describing them to somebody but wasn't able to describe very well and was starting to doubt my memory on this (I have retrograde amnesia and often my memories of things in the past is affected)

Caran d'ache.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 12/06/2020 14:10

I still have mine! Caran d'ache

anotherdayofnothing · 12/06/2020 14:13

Caran d'ache were/are Swiss and were super expensive now and then. Definitely not a mainstream brand in the 80s. We used to get them as presents from our swiss relatives and I treasured them. My DC got given them and did not give them the respect they deserved....

Caran I mean

Lulu1919 · 12/06/2020 14:17

Had a big set about A3 size

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 12/06/2020 18:06

Oh brilliant thank you all.

8 year old me considered them mainstream as every kid in the school had them and other friends out of school so it registered in my head as everyone else had them. The main newsagents in both local towns always had displays of them.

Caran D’Ash, they are French
Derwent do them too

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 16/06/2020 18:51

Wow, I loved mine so much as a kid, but I'd completely forgotten about them!

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/06/2020 22:58

I used to love mine. Great memories such simple times. I remember I thought all colouring pencils could be dipped in water to turn them paint.

BikeRunSki · 17/06/2020 09:51

LOL @Iblinkedandiamold, I never had any, but I dipped my ordinary pencils in water all the time to try!

Ostanovka · 17/06/2020 09:57

I still have my Tony Hart ones too!

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 17/06/2020 11:05

@DianaPrinceRocks

That's them. I looked up the Caran D'Ash but they didn't look quite right in my head but I know my memory can be dodgy on recall.

Tony Hart was BBC so I didn't really see much of him as where I grew up was right along the border RoI/NI and the BBC stations were very much dependent on a large number of outside factors. So I'm still thinking of Don Conroy on RTE The Den when it was on its first home in Rte one before moving to RTE 2. (Wikipedia has been helping me to fill in the gaps)

Yay! Well I was in the West and we didn't have BBC at all so Don Conroy probably did put us onto them Grin.

Thank you for bringing back lovely memories Thanks.

I had Caran d’ache Supracolor. I took them out of the box to arrange in my many pencil cases and my daughter uses them now.

This box did belong to my younger brother but when my parents tried to give them to him to take home he said they were mine. That’s the thing about being the youngest. Nothing is ever yours. My daughter had these now too...

They were expensive. I used all my birthday money to buy mine. I think my brother got his as he studied art Gcse.

I'm starting to think I was lucky. I am in the west too but I had all the english stations expect channel 4 which was too fuzzy to watch most of the time.
I used to love watching Grange hill and Byker Grove. Fridats were great too because Fun house was on.
Now I am singing fun house, whole lot of fun, prizes to be won..in my head.
Wonder what ever happened to the twins on the that.

MegCleary · 10/07/2020 02:50

I think they were conté or comté colouring pencils. I remember them as a pack of 12 in a tray and you could dip them in water for the water colour effect. Again west of Ireland 80/90s upbringing no BBC tv so Don and bosco memories of them colours and they were fierce posh!
