Possibly moving to Dublin

Hoping for some help, please. My DH may possibly be going to work in Dublin for around 3 days a week. If he likes it, there is a possibility that we may all move so he can work full time there. We have 3 small children under 7. Currently live in the NW and the two older children attend an excellent state school. We are in a grammar area for secondary

I don't know anything at all about Dublin bar going for a few weekends. We are in the early stages of trying to work out whether it would be the right decision to even take the 3 day a week job. Would be very grateful for any thoughts on possible relocation. We live in an area of high house prices but Dublin seems even higher!

Dublin house prices are high but the rental market is even tougher. Primary schools are generally good but you'll get a shock when you realise how much you have to pay for here compared to the UK - books, copies, art materials etc. What part of Dublin is the potential job? That will influence where you choose to live. Some parts of the city are incredibly expensive and there are other parts which are more affordable and still nice.

Housing is v expensive and hard to find. Where will he be working, city centre or suburbs? I'd think he'd be better off commuting until he gets the lie of the land and you could maybe have a few visits to see whether you'd like to make the move. It's hard moving with school age dc, I would only do it if I knew it was a long term situation.

Happy to help with locations, schools, etc though 😊

Dublin is a great city in many ways. I'm a very big advocate of primary school education in Ireland, so that would be a big plus for me in your position.

However, Dublin has two big (and related) problems. Housing and transport. Housing is really difficult. Very little on the market to buy (and what's there is expensive). Rent is astronomical and vfm is laughable.

Public transport is very poor in the city (apart from a few areas) and traffic is bad. Long commutes in the car are normal.

It would be helpful to know where he'd be working and what your budget might be. Also bear in mind that everything is more expensive in Ireland. You pay through the nose for every little thing, so he'd need a good salary jump to make it worth it.
