How to mark Holy Communion Day 2021

My DD will be making her Holy Communion in May 2021, so I'm a bit early on this one I know but I'd like to have it sorted in my head. From what I gather people seem to either have something in the house or go to a hotel. Has anyone heard of other ways to mark the day with family??.

We have a small house and a large immediate family. Our house would be perfectly adequate IF you could guarantee the weather (ha!) and have people in the garden. The alternative of a hotel freaks me out at a cost of approx €30/40pp.

Maybe we just have to suck up the cost and go to a hotel and focus on the family get together that we ultimately would like to have to mark this occasion. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I had ours at a hotel.. 9 kids, 17 adults. 3 courses 650 euro. I did not buy even a packet of biscuits. Met a mammy in the locsl shop who had a large crowd coming to her house . She had just spent 400 on drink. I find when you have it at home you dont know when to stop with food and no one eats much !! What a waste of food. Shop around the local hotels. We went to a fab hotel. They had a set menu. Food was very nice not fab but hey i did approx zero so was happy. I had a harry potter theme. Balloons, plastic straws , cups etc etc. Hotel had my DS name and Harry Potter glasses on an a4 sheet on the room door. He loved it. I tried to make it kiddie aa felt guilty over not having a Bouncy Castle. The kids loved it. He loved it and played in the gardens of the hotel. Only thing we forgot was a football. Honestly investigate going out . You willl spend the same amount if not more. It wasnt an excuse for a drinking session either. The men had a few beers and women drove home. All home by 7

Do a hotel, who needs the stress!!!

I have been thinking ahead too. We will go to a local restaurant 25 a head and then back to ours for bouncy castle / tea. Dh would like it at home but I would be left doing all the work and he wouldn't realise the expense at all

Thank you so much for your replies. I'll take your words of wisdom and book a hotel.

Also meant to add....now that you mention it, I could totally see how the cost would add up if having it at home. I would go into complete Irish mammy mode and buy too much food and drink!!

I think it's a very special day and why would you buy a beautiful dress and then go home and spend hours serving food and running around sweating. Every other day of the week for the rest of the year you cook and clean.

@Littleshortcake that is so true!!! Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I could have written this post. We have ours next year as well and I have a massive extended family so I don't know what to do. I can't do a sit down meal as we have too
many people so I was thinking of a function room with buffet type thing or get the Chinese to cater. I'd love to have it at home but my back isn't big enough for a bouncy castle. I'm stressed even thinking of it

I’ve done it at home and I fully agree that it’s too easy to lose the run of the spending. On the other hand it’s easier to spread the cost out and put your head in the sand Smile

One big advantage of going to a hotel is that you have a bit more control over the guest list and don’t have everyone’s friend’s mother’s next door neighbour turning up as well with a few bob for the communion child to eat and drink you out of house and home.

I love hosting and don’t mind really but a hotel really is the more sensible option all round.

A mum at the school was saying she is planning on going away on holiday that evening so it avoids the party drama . They will have tea/cake and then go to the airport.

We have communion this May. We're having it at the house but getting a caterer to do the food. I won't go ott on drink, going to have only wine and beer and won't be too fláthúil with it as I'm not into people getting drunk at a child's party. Have a bouncy castle booked, so I'll have the child of Prague out in the garden the night before😁 Not going getting stressed by it, at the end of the day it's a child's party. For my son's communion, he wanted to go the cinema, so we did and had a bouncy castle on the Sunday and just a small gathering.
You could let yourself go mad but sure then you wouldn't enjoy it yourself

I wonder if there will be communions in May? Our confirmation is on the 19th March so I’d say that certainly won’t go ahead.

mineallmine · 12/03/2020 19:26

I don't know now if it will go ahead, everything's all up in the air now. The confirmation won't go ahead now, all indoor gatherings of more than 100 people are cancelled. I'm sure it will be rescheduled when all this is over.

Procrastination4 · 13/03/2020 14:52

I suppose the only thing is that confirmation and communion can both be done at the regular Sunday mass in the summer or whenever this is over, so there’s no need to panic over handing them before the end of the school year.

Procrastination4 · 13/03/2020 14:52

Having them!
