Where in Dublin by the sea??

Hi all!

Love advice from anyone who knows Dublin please!!

We are moving to Dublin from London for DH work. So looking for somewhere not too far a commute for him (DART probably). Also by the sea, somewhere where you can walk along the sea - not just look out over it. Also, has to be near to good catholic school for girls ( or mixed) - primary only for now but in 5 years will need secondary. Asking a lot I know!

Any ideas at all? I don't know whether to do north or south of Dublin. Can compromise on not being close to airport as we won't travel that much.

Thank you so much!!

I agree with Holly, Sandycove/Glasthule/Dalkey. Absolutely lovely place to live and 23 mins into town on the dart. Such a great place for children, the sea, parks, lovely sense of community. Food market at the weekend, amazing walks, sea swimming, sailing, etc. It's especially good in summer, like being on holidays

Lots of school options, including Castle Park with has lots of ex pat pupils

I have friends in Sandymount, beware of the smells, it is really stinky at times due to the sewage plant!

purplecorkheart · 11/12/2019 22:52

Clontarf stands out in my mind but the house prices are eyewatering in that area

beanaseireann · 12/12/2019 20:22

Gorgeous house on Ardeevin Road just opposite the DART station.- Ard na Greine. for sale for a while so a deal might be done.
Sorry I can't do links - Sherry Fitzgerald Dalkey appear to have it on their books.
Great schools nearby.
I love Dalkey, Dun Laoire, Sandycove, Monkstown areas.

beanaseireann · 12/12/2019 20:24

Oopps
Posted too soon- renting is a good idea to get a feel for an area but fo look at the one i recommended. Sea views from upper windows I think and just a short stroll to Finnegans pub where Bono mught be enjoying a pint.

beanaseireann · 14/12/2019 08:52

@toddlermom
I had hoped some kind Mumsnetter might do a link to that house.
I'm a technophobe Blush and scared of posting a picture as I completely fe*ked up posting a picture on here once and possibly outed myself.

Here you go! Good choice @beanaseireann

Dalkey is the cutest village, dc went to primary there.

2 great things about Dalkey apart from the obvious location: it has an amazing gelateria and the best dentist in Ireland IME 😂

beanaseireann · 14/12/2019 10:25

Thanks chartreuse.
Now who is the best dentist in Ireland ?

chartreuse · 14/12/2019 20:05

I'll DM you if you'd like the name. I used to half a real phobia about going to the dentist and now I actually look forward to my check ups 😵

beanaseireann · 15/12/2019 09:46

Yes please.
I wonder did the OP @toddlermom** see your link.
I love your username. Chartreuse is a fab colour.
I've never tasted the liqueur.

beanaseireann · 15/12/2019 12:01

Bold fail Blush
It was meant to read '... did the OP @toddlermom see your link?'

hollyangel · 15/12/2019 13:45

Amazing house @chartreuse , what a location. I would also love your dentist, hate mine in Stillorga

hollyangel · 15/12/2019 13:45

Stillorgan, posted too quickly

beanaseireann · 15/12/2019 16:56

The OP said her budget was just over €2million - lucky her.
The house is on for over that but has been for sale for a while.
Very little selling at that budget.

beanaseireann · 16/12/2019 07:51

Thank you chartreuse re the dentist.

toddlermom · 21/12/2019 00:20

Love that house thank you
@chartreuse !! And to @hollyangel too. Sorry delay was away for work and pretty useless at checking messages.
So excited to move now! Going to come over for a week in jan to look around different areas and houses. And then move kids once we have found somewhere and know what we really doing. Husband can stay in hotel or apartments until we find somewhere.
Thanks everyone for advice!
I think we have narrowed it down to Monkstown, Dalkey or Sandymount for the moment.

Does anyone know a website or someone who knows about where are the best private primary schools? As that will make our final decision for us more than the actual house.

Thank you everyone for help!

Would you want a mixed or single sex private school? Do you have girls or boys?

Monkstown, Dalkey or Sandymount are great choices.

chartreuse · 21/12/2019 09:10

Just thinking of school's that would be easilier accessible from Sandymount to Dalkey. It's basically a straight road out, 25 mins drive between the two points, 45 mins in traffic.

Private primaries in the area would be Castle Park in Dalkey and St Andrews in booterstown both mixed with lots of ex pats.
There's an international school in Ballsbridge but that would only be practical if you were living in Sandymount.

For boys CBC Monkstown, Willow Park Blackrock (I don't think you'd have a hope of getting in there at short notice)

For girls Rathdown. Maybe Teresians in Donnybrook if you were in Sandymount but the traffic would be an issue if you were coming from the other 2 locations.

Are you set on private schools? There are some very good state primaries in those area's although you may have trouble getting places.

toddlermom · 21/12/2019 09:20

That's really helpful thank you. Have 3 girls and pretty set on private as am thinking Holy Child for when they get to secondary age. I just looked up and there was one great primary - St Anne's - but it shut down.
Wouldn't mind mixed for primary age so if you think of anything please do say!! Thank you!

hollyangel · 21/12/2019 10:02

That's great advice from Chartreuse. I'm not familiar with the private primaries, as Chartreuse said, we're very lucky in that the state primaries in those areas are very good.

If you're set on Holy Child for secondary, why don't you ring the school secretary there and ask which primary school the majority of their girls come from? They would know the best schools in the area.

Best of luck with it all and feel free to PM if you need any other advice.

chartreuse · 21/12/2019 10:54

The girls primary in Dalkey is Loreto national school, it's non fee paying, then most of the girls would go on to the attached private secondary, but I'd say some would go to Holy Child. There are 2 mixed but they are CofI and multidenominational, the latter impossible to get into.

Monkstown is tricky for schools, there's a big primary there but it's Irish speaking. A couple of nice small mixed schools nearby in Blackrock but they are CofI.

In Sandymount the big girls school is Lakelands lots of girls go to Muckross. There's also a CofI and Educate together. Lots of ex pat's go to a school called John Scotus morning n Ballsbridge near Sandymount but personally I would give that a very wide bearth!

The Harold School in a Glasthule is big and very poplar, catholic, mixed, I'd guess a feeder for holy child due to location. It's about halfway between Dalkey and Monkstown.

If I were you I'd visit Castle Park in Dalkey, it's lovely, mix of Irish and international families. It would be an easy drive from Monkstown and doable from Sandymount as you'd be going against the traffic.

DublinBlowin · 31/12/2019 15:27

I have a son in Willow Park and most female siblings seem to go to mount anville, although my DDs go to Alex.

DublinBlowin · 31/12/2019 15:28

@chartreuse I think John Scotus have moved out of Dublin, but I agree wouldn’t be for me Smile

Takeitonthechin · 31/12/2019 20:35
