RIP Gay.

He held a mirror up to Irish society and wasn't afraid of controversy and challenging the establishment. He played a big part in modernising Ireland.

He couldn't hide his feelings towards his guests, you were in no doubt who he didn't like, he was very condescending and judgemental - the way he treated Annie Murphy was disgraceful but she stood up to him and there was a big backlash towards him at the time. I wonder if he ever regretted how nasty he was in that interview as it's one the keeps coming up whenever he's discussed.

Agree.
Didn't he help a young drug addict living on the streets of Dublin by featuring her plight on his morning show?
Can't remember the details ....she rang in , I think.

I agree that he did some incredibly valuable things for women, and started important conversations in a changing Ireland, but he was also condescending and sexist, and in many ways a fairly conservative Fianna Fáiler and Catholic.

I think he was a good presenter and certainly did play a part in the changing face of Ireland, but agree that he was also judgemental and sexist.

Tbh, I am totally baffled about the hype that has surrounded him since his 'retirement', the way people speak of him in a revered way as if he were a god, and the way that his death has practically taken over the Irish media at the moment Hmm

I think my mother actually probably does think that God looks like Gay Byrne with a long white beard. Grin

I was once in a house in the mid 90s where three framed pictures had pride of place on the living room wall: the pope, a sacred heart (complete with light), and a photo of Gaybo shaking hands with the woman of the house 😂
