Hotel recommendation

I would like an autumn weekend hotel break, for me and DH. Main requirement is a nice hotel room, proper bathroom (for lounging in a bubble bath with a glass of wine and a book) and either a nice restaurant in the hotel, or else a nice restaurant within walking distance of the hotel. And I would like it to be no more than a couple of hours from Belfast, so not much further south than the south side of Dublin? (Or across the country, as appropriate).

It's not that I can't find any, quite the opposite, I feel like we are spoilt for choice. So I was wondering if anyone had any particular recommendations?

Bumping for you. I've no recommendations at the moment.

LivLemler · 03/09/2018 19:49

I was coming on to suggest Monart but it's outside your search distance.

Had a lovely time in Galgorm but (hope this doesn't sound stalkerish!) I have half a feeling you're from that neck of the woods so might not feel like much of a break.

My parents love Harvey's Point, not sure how long it takes to get there.

LivLemler · 03/09/2018 19:49

Oh, and of course Lough Erne, but I personally preferred Galgorm.

beanaseireann · 03/09/2018 20:06

I stayed in Slough Erne a few years ago - I was a bit disappointed to be honest.
Have you ever stayed in Dublin treaclesoda ?
Carton House ?

beanaseireann · 03/09/2018 20:13

Lough Erne Blush

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 03/09/2018 20:19

Farnham Estate in Cavan? Haven’t been myself but family have been to a few weddings and a NYE event and said the food was great.

honeyrider · 03/09/2018 20:54

The Wineport Lodge in Glasson near Athlone.

The old reliables such as The Shelbourne or The Westbury in Dublin are lovely. Especially if you are on the sort of weekend where you don't want to go past the front door after you've arrived. Nice bar in the Westbury for evening cocktails.

I know it's far far outside your radius but the Sheen Falls in Kenmare is probably the best I've ever stayed at in Ireland or overseas. Worth the extra drive?

RavenWings · 03/09/2018 21:47

The Marker in Dublin maybe.

TwentySmackeroos · 03/09/2018 21:47

Castle Leslie?
Powerscourt? Though can be €€€
Druid’s Glen (though often full of kids on weekends)

Xocaraic · 03/09/2018 21:58

The Ardtara just north of Magherafelt is a lovely country house hotel.
Admit I haven't been since early 2016 but worth checking out.

Littlegreyauditor · 03/09/2018 22:49

I was just about to suggest Ard Tara. It’s in Upperlands, so totally drivable from Belfast and has several rooms with baths and fireplaces. Restaurant is good too, recently taken over by Browns restaurant in Derry.

Also worth considering Lough Eske near Donegal town. Reasonable restaurant, but the rooms are great and the bathroom was fab. Huge huge power showers and massive baths. DH (the bather in our house) spent about 4 hours in the bath.
I’ve been to weddings in Harvey’s Point, but never stayed over. In-laws speak very highly of it though and they like a luxury hotel.

The Westin in Dublin was great too. Lovely beds. I genuinely considered whether or not I could conceal the king sized Divan in a Mini Cooper.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 03/09/2018 22:51

The Fitzwilliam is amazing in Dublin City.
Carton House is also fantastic.

treaclesoda · 03/09/2018 23:19

Thank you for the suggestions, there are one or two here that I hadn't heard of before Smile

Castle Leslie, nr Monaghan

dueanotherchange · 06/09/2018 14:36

If you'll go as far as Wicklow I'd recommend Hunter's in Rathnew. It's very olde worlde and the bathrooms do have proper baths but are quite basic.

The food's lovely though and who doesn't like coming back to a fire lit in their room.

We'd a lovely time. If you're on the M50 and M11 anyway, it's really only 20 minutes beyond the southside of Dublin.

MyDoctor · 06/09/2018 14:45

+1 for Farnham Estate, although it might be a little far from Belfast. Lovely relaxation rooms there, with nice walks outside.

Carrickdale, just across the border after Newry has nice junior suites with jacuzzis.

housewifeoflittleitaly · 06/09/2018 14:48

I agree with Ardtara, beautiful place great food. Also a place called Tullylagan Country House Hotel & Estate near Cookstown, beautiful place went last week good food, ask for the suite though as the other rooms are a lot smaller.

FreeButtonBee · 06/09/2018 14:52

Castle Leslie - the gate lodge is a bit more modern comfort than the big house and the restaurant upstairs in the lodge has really really improved (I got married there a while back and the food is much better than then). I had a really great meal there at Easter. You can still have afternoon tea at the big house which is interesting and the estate itself is good for a walk.

Rathsallagh if you haven’t already booked OP.
