I highly recommend this. I assume that it will be on the RTE player.

I'm now watching a documentary on BBC4 about the role of women in society since the vote. Even though British women had their struggles, Britain didn't appear to have the underlying hatred ( I know - strong word. I make no apologies) of women which Irish society had.

I recorded it last night and have it set up for tonight aswell, don't know why but I have a feeling I'm going to want to watch in one go at the weekend. With wine for the rage and tears 😓

Will watch this.

I wonder if it will cover how the role and freedoms of women in Ireland was so much better in the first 20 years of the 20th century than the following 20 years. One of the downsides of the way independence came about was that the Volunteers (a minority with a rabidly conservative Catholic ethos... think Pearse, Dev) ended up running things and dictating public opinion, while the more progressive and pragmatic viewpoint (think Larkin, most of C na mBan) was squeezed out of public life.

I agree entirely, MarDhea. De Valera was, effectively, McQuaid's stooge. Now there was a man who hated women (McQuaid)

Meant to say 'this is Ireland' on YouTube was out before the referendum and is a reeling in the years style of how fucked over we were. It's about 20 minutes long and covers alot. I showed my friends who weren't Irish and wouldn't have heard of most of what was in it and they were horrified.

WildIrishRose1 · 21/06/2018 23:01

I'll check that out, thanks.

Well last night's episode showed Irish women were better treated before independence.

DeValera didn't like women probably to do with him being illegitimate as it was called back then and how it blocked him from joining the priesthood.

DeValera's son also called Eamonn who was a professor in gynaecology was involved in the illegal child trafficking to wealthy parents in America.
