Recommendations for places to live in Wicklow

Hi. Could anyone advise? Where would you recommend living in Co. Wicklow that is within an hour to dublin/dublin airport; welcoming to newcomers and has good primary and secondary schools close by? We like Greystones but the houses are quite expensive.

Any thoughts, anyone?

You’d be hard pushed to get from anywhere other than the most northern bit to get to the airport in an hour. But that said, Bray has a lovely feel and a bit of a buzz, Glendalough is stunning, Wicklow town is nice too.

What sort of property do you want? Do you want town or country? Bray has a reasonable range of schools, but isn't as salubrious as Greystones. I do love both Greystones and Delgany, but I'm a Dubliner and they both seem quite remote and self-contained to me, whereas Bray seems easier to leave to get to other places.

Enniskerry is a really picturesque village, my DH was really keen to live there when we moved back, but again it was a bit too far out for me. It has good primaries, but you'd have to travel for a secondary.

Have you looked at Kilmacanogue? It's right by the N11 but very rural and leafy. There is a national school there, but I think Bray would be the nearest for secondary.

I've decided, this is your house. It's bloody gorgeous and practically next door to a national school.

End of thread. Grin

Nosugar that place is amazing, just a tad outside our budget! We're looking for 4 to 5 bed detached (ideally) and could stretch up to 750 euro. Don't mind if it's a little outside a town. Do people tend to pay the advertised price in Ireland or do houses usually go for under the asking price? We're in the UK at the moment so not sure what the norm is for house offers in wicklow.

Just looked at Enniskerry. Beautiful houses but steep. I'll check out Kilmacanogue.

It depends where you are, but at the moment most properties go for a bit under the asking although popular parts of Dublin often go a bit above. You can look up prices achieved on previous sales from 2010 onwards now, here which might help you get a feel for how prices have been moving in the areas that you might be interested in. Also, see if you can find how long they've been on, as you can go quite low if they've had it on the market for a while. For instance this one, dropped €70K in Sept 2017, so it's been on the market for quite a while and if I was offering on it I would start 15% under and they would probably settle for 10% under.

Thank you. That's really useful. I'll look at wicklow town too as mentioned by a pp.

Would you consider North county Dublin? 20 mins to the airport and you'd get a decent house for your budget. Malahide and Skerries are lovely towns.

Ifkip · 15/06/2018 23:00

I love Malahide but to be honest I thought it would be out of my budget. I'll take a look.

Oops. Big link but you can use the filters to refine the search.

Ifkip · 15/06/2018 23:14

I've never considered Skerries. I'll definitely take a look, thank you. The location is good so not sure why it wasn't on my radar.

It's fab Ifkip. I prefer it over Malahide, I think it can be quite chaotic there. Skerries is more spacious, well worth a visit.
