Since I was a child I have wondered why there is a church in the carpark of Cornelscourt Dunnes. Was it already there when they built the supermarket or was it some sort of social experiment to combine religion and grocery shopping?

Please add your own random questions, Ireland is full of puzzles. Grin

In all the years I've gone there, I've never even thought about it 😂

MayFayner · 31/05/2018 18:33

What? Where is the church- in the car park? I've never noticed it.

GrainneWail · 31/05/2018 18:36

Yep, out the back. It's been there forever. I find the church at the airport an odd concept. I get having a multi faith prayer room but a whole church, on campus is a bit mad. Like UCD actually.

Eminybob · 31/05/2018 18:37

I can’t answer your question but I have one of my own.

Over what timescale is The Greatest Showman set? It seems like it must be set over several years, at least 10, but his children don’t age a day. I know obviously it would have been problematic to change the child actors in line with the timeline, but it really bugged me!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/05/2018 18:38

It’s at the back May, if you come down the exit ramp of the multi-storey car park it’s right in front of you as you exit.

Haha I just realised this is in craicnet! My question is not Ireland related but hopefully someone will be able to help!

MayFayner · 31/05/2018 19:02

I had to google because I couldn't believe that I'm quite this oblivious but clearly I am.

I think I vaguely notice it and assume it's a disused place but I see there's mass there every day Shock

Anyway I saw this Irish Times piece which suggests that the church was built as a place for staff to use to take time out.

The only thing is, Paul Costelloe, who is quoted in the article as saying the above, wouldn't be the most reliable person for historical accuracy 😂 Lovely as he is.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/05/2018 19:07

Grin You'll notice it every time you go now. That's an interesting article, I would hope that they are treating their employees better now that the economy is picking up again. I had thought quite well of them as a company before reading that, although I did know about the strikes obviously.

I guess the deal with the church at UCD would be that when the campus was built there were probably quite a lot of observant Catholic students who would want to go to mass on holy days and could possibly swamp whatever the nearest church is because there's so many of them. I went to UCD and only vaguely remember that there was a church there, I never went into it.

That makes sense, Ameracano, especially after the move from earlsfort terrace where they had university church on the doorstep.

I'm amazed that at there's mass every day in cornelscourt.

MayFayner · 31/05/2018 19:53

I only went in there once and it was because my friend wanted to play the beginning of Garth Brooks "the Dance" on the piano thing (mini-organ?) in there.

Such rebels 😂

Btw I wish to stress that I was never into Garth Brooks, ever. I do concede that the piano at the start of that song is quite nice though.

MayFayner · 31/05/2018 19:54

^ UCD church I mean!

GrainneWail · 31/05/2018 21:52

I feel very boring that I was only in UCD church for a wedding Wink

EleanorLavish · 01/06/2018 22:32

We live in Blackrock and often went to mass in UCD, particularly over lent-it was “on at a good time” according to my mother.
We also used to go Holy Week in Blackrock College ( my bro went there).

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/06/2018 22:41

Is that a common thing to do Eleanor? I was brought up C of I and we wouldn't really go to a church service other than our own parish church, unless it was a special occasion like a funeral or wedding obviously.

Depends on how much you need your Mass fix I suppose

GrainneWail · 02/06/2018 14:51

OK, everyone is cross because we were half an hour late to my dad's because I made dh swing by cornelscourt so I could kd peek inside Blush. In my defence, we're not out this way that often. Not only is there mass daily, except Sunday, there are two masses a day from Monday to Friday!! I don't know if the local parishes have two masses daily mid week so it's definitely the place to go for your mass fix and a pint of milk and a notioney guna

Grin So did you explain to your family about the strange hairy-handed trucker on the internet who asked a random question about the church?

WeShouldOpenABar · 02/06/2018 16:45

My nan loves that church, shopping and praying and only have to leave the house once that's her dream Grin

Apileofballyhoo · 02/06/2018 16:46

There's a church right next to SuperValu in Kilkenny too, sharing a car park. I was there a few weeks ago and there was a funeral on while loads of people came and went with their shopping. Seems a bit strange.

GrainneWail · 02/06/2018 17:58

I did, Americano, but only told dh why I needed to run into Dunnes when we got there. He wasn't terribly amused. He ratted out my madness when we got to dad's. Traitor.

I can’t believe there’s a church in Cornlescourt! That’s mad!

Thanks Grainne.
Now I know there is a St.Peregrine and me thinking it only referred to a falcon. Smile
