Where has all the Kerrygold gone?

Dunnes hasn't had any at all for nearly two weeks, and I tried the local Londis and they didn't have any either. Admittedly that's only two shops, but Kerrygold is usually ubiquitous.

Mind you, my local Dunnes hasn't had any Hendricks for three weeks now, so perhaps it's just not trying hard enough.

I read on Facebook that tesco and Dunne's won't be stocking kerrygold for a while, after a falling out over pricing.

Londis should have it, but maybe sold out if it's difficult to find anywhere else

Shock I have a Centra on my school run too, so I'll try there. If Dunnes think I'll be buying fake-Kerrygold (Kerrymaid, Dairy Gold etc) they can bloody well think again.

Any ideas about the Hendricks? I expect I really need to get myself to an off-license.

The French are running out of butter. Perhaps they've bought and substituted Kerrygold for French butter.
They've taken the Rugby World Cup from us.
We've lost out on the relocation of the EC bank to Paris.
They've probably bought all our butter too Sad

It’s Thierry Henri all over again

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 20/11/2017 19:25

My local Centra only had the fake Kerrymaid yesterday

honeyrider · 20/11/2017 21:13

Supervalu have it.

inisfree · 20/11/2017 22:35

I saw it in my local Lidl a couple of weeks ago. Tesco are selling the smaller packs at the moment.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/11/2017 22:40

I might have to try SuperValue then. I don’t have a convenient one, but I’m sure I can find the time to get to one, butter is important.

Butter is a generic dairy product, I don't mean to be goady just genuinely interested to know if you can taste the difference between Kerrygold and the supermarket own brand butters? I buy Tesco or Lidl butter, I honestly couldn't tell the difference between them and kerrygold. Aside from the price! And I'd rather pay less for it, it's dear enough as it is (€2.19 for a pound in both shops)

itusedtobeverydifferent · 24/11/2017 22:27

I love Lurpak. I once bought the Aldi version and OH MY GOODNESS I could tell. It was awful. I love Aldi but not that!

inisfree · 25/11/2017 09:20

I agree with you Different. Aldi butter is rank, I've also noticed it has a faster melting point than other butters. Kerrygold tastes far superior to any other butter ( in Ireland anyway). I once tasted Kerrygold bought in France and it didn't quite taste like the stuff from home.

Butter is a dairy product but it's far from generic. Different brands of butter differ in "recipe": their salt content, the fat:water ratio, the air content (due in part to the churning method). Another big difference is whether is butter is made from fresh pasteurised cream (sweet butter), unpasteurised cream that's been left to stand a few days (raw cultured butter, sometimes called farm or country butter), or pasteurised cream that's had lactic acid added (commercial cultured butter). The breed and diet of the cows (pasture or grain fed, etc.) also affects the colour and proportion of cream fat that is saturated fat. All these factors affect taste.

Afaik, Kerrygold is a sweet butter from pasture-fed cows with a relatively high salt and water content, whereas Lurpak is a commercial cultured butter from grain-fed (or mixed-feed) cows with less salt and water. They taste very different to me. I think Kerrygold sold in Europe is cultured, unlike the stuff sold at home.

I know far too much about butter... BlushGrin

Well that would explain it. Thanks Mardhea.

My Granny always said “support the home industries”, I can’t buy any butter other than Kerrygold because of her ☘️

Apileofballyhoo · 25/11/2017 18:59

I quite happily eat own brand butter, but I tried it from Dunne's once and it was absolutely vile. So there is definitely a difference.

My DM wouldn't eat their own butter growing up, my DGM had to buy shop butter for her.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/11/2017 13:02

I can taste the difference. I don't like nordic or New Zealand butters, anything that's pale or too salty isn't to my taste. I like them creamy and sweet. When I was in London I usually ate President unsalted and now that I live in Ireland I eat Kerrygold. I haven't tried all the own brand versions, I just tried a few brands and then stopped trying new brands when I found the one I liked.
