Keep safe Ninja
Wet and a little windy here in Dublin.
My RTE News app is down. Aghhhhh

justforthisthread101 · 16/10/2017 11:45

Keep safe @FluffyNinja

The elderies are living in Dublin quite close to the sea. Dad has been WhatsApping pictures of the gas lamps that he's got out and tested. I'm pretty sure Noah had them on the ark Grin. Hopefully they won't get badly enough hit to have to use them as I'm not certain they're a good idea!

eloisesparkle · 16/10/2017 11:51

HSE supplied agency carer to my elderly uncle unable to make it so if you have an elderly neighbour who relies on carers coming in could you check and see if they are ok.
This is in no way a criticism of the carers, of course. Weather conditions and public transport cancelled.
Obviously my uncle has family who are helping.

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2017 14:57

Hope everyone is OK. It's a bit wild here in the mid-West, but not as bad as forecast I don't think.

I got sent home from work a couple of hours ago, and DH has just come in the door thank God.

GoNorthatthefirstleft · 16/10/2017 15:05

I'm in bangor right near the sea front its getting a bit windy here have had a lovely lazy day with the kids just woken from a nap. Hoping it doesn't get toi bad phones charged just in case.

MrsDustyBusty · 16/10/2017 15:08

Far less dramatic than I imagined in Dublin so far!

Also, the guardian subtitled Leo Varadkar. I would have imagined him fully intelligible to any English speakers.

TisMeTheLadFromTheBar · 16/10/2017 15:18

GoNorthatthefirstleft going by Met Éireann's graphs, the hurricane is going to move up towards ye and off to Scotland late this evening.
One lady dead in Waterford already RIP.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/10/2017 15:22

A lot of stuff is subtitled now MrsDB. They expect it to be viewed silently on computer by office staff who really ought to be working instead.

Super windy here in Warwickshire in the UK so hope you are all hunkered down and have heat and light etc. Brother and family North of DUblin so hoping they miss the worst of it

almondfinger · 16/10/2017 16:03

Thank God we seem to be over the worst in Cork suburbs. We have 2 trees down in the back garden and I have never been so scared of the weather. We have a huge wall of glass on the south of the house and I thought it was going to be wrenched out of it's frame this morning.
Seems like there may be no school tomorrow either. At lease we have had power all day.

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2017 16:11

Glad you're OK in Cork almondfinger.

Hopefully it'll subside here before too long - I'm about an hour north of you. Still have power so far fingers crossed

My teens have been watching Sky News and are amused by the presenter pronouncing taoiseach like 'tea shock' and the complete mangling of Leo Varadkar's name.

MrsDustyBusty · 16/10/2017 16:21

Yeah, Sarah Jane Mee on sky news really struggled with the words Ireland, Donegal and even Cork this morning.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/10/2017 21:41

Hopefully it's easing off now in Dublin. Although it was very bad generally, we were lucky as we are very sheltered to the east and south so looking out my windows it didn't seem such a bad storm. It's been worse for us with milder storms if the wind is blowing from the west, because we are totally exposed in that direction. My Mum lives halfway up a mountain and she lost power mid-afternoon, but she has it back now. I was a bit worried that she might have to move in with me for a couple of days, Mum is always welcome but her dog is totally ditsy and hyper and gets on my nerves and my dog's nerves.

honeyrider · 16/10/2017 23:16

Fortunately we still have electricity though it went and came back immediately about half a dozen times this afternoon. 3 fatalities, hopefully no more.

I think the emergency services and the National Emergency Coordination group have done a great job so far.

justforthisthread101 · 17/10/2017 10:26

So glad all are safe and well.

I was listening to Newstalk on my way into work this morning (I live in London) and one of the presenters was wondering if the school closures today were an overreaction, particularly in Dublin but the other one shouted him down, rightly in my view. Some of my friends in Dublin have street closures with trees down and unsafe roofs and things - getting the kids to and from school would be a nightmare.

Eoghan Murphy was on and saying they had to make a call last night as otherwise they'd have had to inspect all the schools this morning. Sounds like the National Emergency Coordination group have done a fantastic job. His anger when talking about eejits kite surfing or walking on piers yesterday was palpable. I'd fine the lot of them personally. Such selfish behaviour.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/10/2017 12:28

I'm in Dublin and I wouldn't have sent the DC to their schools yesterday even if they had been open. There are a lot of mature/old trees in the suburb where I live and I knew there would be road blockages. I think it was wise to keep the schools closed today too as the fallen trees are still being cleared and with all diversions in place and no Luas running the morning rush hour would have been terrible.

FluffyNinja · 18/10/2017 18:25

Well, we finally got our power, water (and internet) restored but still lots of folk locally without power and water tonight. The damage in some areas of West Cork has been pretty devastating.
We were very lucky to get away with some minor damage. I'm just hoping that the storm due on Friday won't exacerbate the situation for those still struggling.
Our primary school is still closed as they repair the roof. They're hoping to re-open on Friday.
