Cross border hip replacement

Hi, I'm asking for my dad.

We live in the south and he's on an 18 month waiting list for hip replacement, both need to be done.
He's in a lot of pain.

Last week we got a leaflet through the door from knightsbridge private hospital saying they do hip replacement on the cross border scheme.
Basically you pay and the hse pay for it 20 days later, or something like that.

My question is has anyone any experience of doing it this way?
And also would anyone be familiar with this hospital? Does it have a good reputation?

Thanks Smile

Not familiar with the cross border operation bit. But familiar with Kingsbridge. Owned by 352 Healthcare who in the last few years have really started to be a proper rival for the Ulster Clinic for private care. I have used antenatal services, private outpatient and minor injuries unit and found all to be excellent. Obviously depends on the surgeon/doctor you deal with too! The facilities are excellent though.

A family member used the hospital and the cross border directive for cataract surgery. They were very happy with everything. As this was a day time procedure as opposed to inpatient the application was different. Both the HSE and the hospital were very helpful with forms and questions. The amount you are reimbursed will depend on the rates set by the HSE.

That's for all the feedback, I'll pass it on to my dad Smile

I think his main concern is aftercare, I think he's going to stick with the waiting list here

In our case, the procedure was performed about nine months ago. They were just called for a HSE list assessment which they attended as they need the second eye done. They were told the wait was at a minimum another 12 months after already waiting a year and apparently being a priority case!
Have you spoken to anyone about aftercare? This is in the FAQs

  1. Can I avail of follow up care in Ireland or do I have to return to the EU country of treatment? Follow up care may be availed of in Ireland or a patient may return to the EU country of treatment.

  2. Do I have to receive all my care abroad? No, you can apply for access to certain aspects of your care abroad with further care provided thereafter to be provided within the state as deemed appropriate.

  3. If treatment is not successful, can I re-access the medical treatment in the EU country and will I get reimbursed?Yes and yes.

  4. If something goes wrong with my treatment/procedure, can I return for follow up treatment and will this be covered by the scheme?Yes

  5. If there are complications with the procedure, can I access the Irish healthcare system to put it right?Yes

Slightly off topic..... but can anyone throw some light on the subject of the E111, and reciprocal arrangements between Uk/ ROI?
I heard of someone who was charged a fee for seeing a Dr. in ROI and told that E111 was not acceptable as the practise was "private".

I was under the impression that this was only the case for hospitals In Southern Ireland? (The NHS paying thing) as NI is part of the uk and so has the NHS the NHS wouldn't find cross border private treatment I don't think Confused

This is the page for access to the EU directive in the UK as it stands currently.
