It is inspiring to see Ireland has definitively been freed from the shackles of the Catholic church and its prejudice.

Not even a FG supporter, but delighted to see our future leader is both the son of an immigrant and a gay man.

I know, and so his Dad's Indian and he's one shade darker than the rest of us, but this was in Dublin, I am nearly a decade older and there were plenty of non-white people in Dublin when I was growing up, so in my view he's too privileged to know what prejudice is. He has gone through life as an intelligent and well-educated rich boy, he's tall, he's relatively handsome, he's not forty yet. His father was a doctor, not running a corner shop, so although his father's story might be interesting, Leo has absolutely no comprehension of what it would be like to face prejudice in the context of a job-hunt for example, as a mother who's been out of the workplace for a decade. He wouldn't care.

which is fine of course, but I don't want to be lectured on prejudice by a young educated man with a good job

He was in class with Kathryn Thomas - or so she said and he was always very focused.
He must be very very bright- he got a scholarship for med in Trinity ( I think I heard that last night on the news)

I think once the fawning group stop falling over themselves at the thrill of their own right-on-ness about being delighted the teaoiseach being gay they might recall his right wing stance and remember his comments about women.

He's announced a 8th amendment referendum for 2018.

Anyone see his comment on Love Actually today? Nice candour. I immediately thought of mumsnet when I saw it with the amount of mentions that film gets!

I am not right or left wing. I'm probably somewhere in the middle. But I like him and believe he deserves a chance. There's no point trying to categorise him until we see him in action. He's young, a bit sheltered and probably not quite experienced enough for the role but hopefully he doesn't make any massive mistakes and listens to people and their concerns.
The freshness and enthusiasm for the role really shows.

Very disappointed he's started off with cronyism re judge appointment. Others applied. So 'same ol, same ol' 😰
And I really don't think MMO'C should have been made a super junior with €16,000 extra when there are homeless people living in hotels.
What genius decided the banks could throw people out of their homes( despite the banks getting bailed out themselves by the taxpayers). I'm cr*p at economics but I remember thinking if they put people out of their homes or sell off investment properties, the people left homeless will have to be looked after by the taxpayer anyway so why not help them stay in their homes by some means 😱😱😱

I think it would be silly to assume that because he is half-Indian he is some sort of champion of liberalism. My husband is Indian and, like my family, many thinking Indians are very socially conservative on things such as abortion etc (because it leads to terrible things like female infanticide).
