This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Thoughts on painting a 2nd hand cot/cotbed??

Hi all
I'm thinking of getting a cot/cotbed (reading some other posts - still not decided which yet) second hand. A lot of them seem to be in plain wood and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on whether it'd be ok to paint one? Obviously it'd need to be proper wood that I could sand and undercoat, not plasticky wood (??) but is it ok to do that, I'm sure you can get not toxic paints etc. Has anyone tried to do this themselves???
Sometimes I think I just make things difficult for myself!!

We painted a hand-me-down one and it looks smashing! It took quite a while because we sanded down all the grubby hand prints etc, but we did it over a long evening while I was in my nesting mode - it's lasted two babies very well and is ready for our 3rd - bog standard wall paint used (although I reckon satinwood might make more sense as it's fairly wipeable). Do it - it'll look lovely...

Thanks bubba,.. I quite like the idea of putting a bit of ourselves into it if that doesn't sound too corny, plus it'd save a pile of money!! Can do the rest of the furniture the same too. I probably won't be so keen when I have been sanding and painting for hours on my hands and knees though!!

lol, probably not at the end of a few long hours, but definitely worth it and even if your little one isn't as gushing as he or she should be, you'll feel proud of yourselves and know you've put time and effort in!

Enjoy!
