Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

puzzled over cot /moses basket mattresses

Am pg with first baby and just started buying things. We've seen a cot we want to buy and also a moses basket, so now need to get mattresses for both. Not only was i confused as to what type of mattress is best, but having read some posts on here i am now even more confused.

There seem to be a lot of comments that each baby needs a new mattress.

We plan to have 4 children very close together in ages as i will be 34 when no 1 arrives so time isn't on our side. I have a big house and so there is no reason why we should have to put the moses basket away in between uses.

I visualised No 1 being in moses basket until circa 6 months, then moving into cot. When No 2 arrives it then has moses basket, and at 6 months moves into cot and No 1 moves from cot to one of the 4 spare double beds that i already own. And so on until all 4 beds have a child in them and we then sell the cot/moses basket.

Am i being unrealistic in expecting to reuse the mattresses for 4 babies in this scenario? (i do not want any babies in my 40's so will be 4 babies within next 5 years!)

And any tips on what the best mattresses are made of would be appreciated!

Good luck! I do't have any advice on types of mattress - I;ve just got one which fits and feels reasonably comfy when I sit on it. All moses basket mattresses are about the same anyway I think.

The reason against re-use is that there is some suggestion that SIDS (cot death) risk may be greater where mattresses are reused so they recommend a new mattress for each child.

Also, a moses basket is very unlikely to fit a baby until 6 months. DD was pretty tiny so still in hers until about 17 weeks, DS was too long by 10 weeks.

I'm confused about this too. Friends of ours have given us the moses basket that their baby has grown out of. It hasn't been stored in a garage/shed etc, and has come from a pet and smoke free home.

Any guidance? I can understand why a mattress that has absorbed another child's wee/sick etc would be bad, but this mattress is plastic, surely I can just clean it?
