Best quality mattress/bed for toddler

We are in the process of buying a new mattress for ourselves (6 foot Sealy Grand Pillow). I'm pregnant and we are co-sleeping with our 2.10 year old. We would however also like to get a bed for him now. I'd like to get the best quality one I can in terms of breathability etc. I know that I can get a sealy in a single bed. Is this very extravagant? I'm thinking that maybe the reason to get an expensive one for us is that our bodies are old and broken-down.

Yes I was pondering this. Mattresses have cone shaped springs, so the heavier you are the less comfortable they are - so I think that a better quality mattress is more of a priority when you are older.

Also remember that children tend to jump on their beds, spill things and generally play on and off them and an expensive mattress seems a big extravagance, especially as most mattresses are supposed to last around 10 years. I have decided to just buy a cheap mattress for my DS and then in about 10 years time when he is 11/12 and it needs replacing I will get him a better quality one.

However the breathability thing seems important too. But remember that you will probably want to get a waterproof mattress protector (I can't recommend one enough for your own bed, too, if you plan to co-sleep with the new baby) - and this will probably negate the breathable-ness of the mattress!

I always did wonder about whether the waterproof protectors were safe with small babies, to be honest. I'm wondering if it allows less air through. It's a good point that they are not that heavy, so I'm thinking that the highest spec mattress probably isn't necessary.
