Does anyone add a mattresses to their travel cots? My girls are 6.5 months and we're going away next week. The mattress provided is very hard but it says not to add a mattress. What do you do?

Do you mean that very thin hard layer at the bottom? I never understood how that could possibly by comfortable!

Yes I’ve always added a mattress to mine. Surely it’s no different to a mattress in a cot?

Yes the really hard thing at the bottom😂 That's what I'm thinking! They're used to their mattress in their cot and they had one in their next to me cribs too x

I can’t imagine having to sleep on something like that tbh! But it might depend on the travel cot as it’s probably safety related. I’d say use your common sense! I’ve always used a proper mattress in them no problem.

Yes I have used a proper mattress in the travel cot- it shouldn’t be an issue so long as its the correct size so no gaps. That was when we moved abroad and were waiting on furniture shipping so it was for a couple of months. But when actually going on holiday and short on space I wouldn’t bother taking a mattress and actually they’ve been fine on the board style mattress it comes with and slept well.

Why shouldn't you add a mattress? We just took the one from their cot, as it was same size as the travel cot. As long as the mattress covers the full base so there's no gap round the side. The 'mattress' that comes with travel cots is ridiculously thin! We used a travel cot at home for a few months, with a proper mattress, as baby was too big for next to me cot.

100% always add a mattress

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/01/2026 19:20

I certainly added one - from John Lewis, where I’d bought the cot.

oustedbymymate · 15/01/2026 19:25

Yes we had a hauk cot and bought the mattress too

My dad had a mattress made online for my children so that it fit exactly and was made from the “safe” materials. I’m not sure exactly where from but he wasn’t very techy so it can’t have been difficult to source. They both stayed in a travel cot weekly as babies/toddlers and were very cosy.

Yes I add one, I got it from the tiny bed company. The do some off the shelf ones to fit some travel cots but they also make custom ones too
