Travel cot mattress

We just bought a travel cot for regular home use. I know they’re not designed for this but space wise we have to. We’ve bought the Joie allura because it’s what they had at Argos (we had to get it quickly as she suddenly learned to pull herself up out of nowhere so the next to me suddenly became unviable) and bought a cuggl travel cot mattress to go with it. Baby is 8 months. I’m confused about the rules of travel cots and mattresses. Some of the internet says a baby shouldn’t sleep on a travel cot base for more than a few days because they’re not supportive enough for their spines so in theory a proper mattress on top should be better. Some sources say not to add a different mattress as this can be unsafe. There are no gaps between the mattress and the cot sides. I’m so confused about what we’re supposed to do.

Isn’t it better to buy a compact cot which probably takes up the same amount of space as a travel cot?

Sorry I’m a bit confused - did the Joie travel cot not come with a mattress? Why did you also need the Cuggle one?

We have a Joie travel cot for holidays (not the allura) and ours specifically says not to add an extra mattress, so first thing to do is to check your manual that came with the cot. Baby will fine sleeping without the extra mattress for a few days (weve used it for two weeks when on holiday!) Then longer term, do a bit more research into more suitable options. You can get travel cots which come with their mattress which is approved for use, or I'd go for either a next2me forever (we have one of these and its like a bigger next2me with much bigger sides so can be used until age 4 and can turn into a separate cot / floorbed), or something like this, which is not much bigger than the allura - https://www.mamasandpapas.com/products/petite-compact-cot-for-baby-to-18-months-white-ctpe02w00?utm_term=37824340951205&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=uk+-+shopping+-+furniture+-+pmax+-+priority&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20527428624&gclid=Cj0KCQjwu7TCBhCYARIsAM_S3Njag1EdSJrIUxY1wBeHZh0BR3NIYwWIInFyuYYEYJKhMVwsT_dGDCoaAjZuEALw_wcB or this which will see you until around age 3 and converts to a toddler bed -https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9483477?_gl=115w515c_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQjwu7TCBhCYARIsAM_S3NjLXDUKbTREGcXotvtEo0mutAKEGmo1tOSPqCyaFlxf_XSkzjyLlTEaAjc1EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

We use our travel cot as a playpen in the lounge so you can still get use out of it.

If you dont have space for anything bigger than a travel cot though, what is your plan for when baby is 3-4? As they won't fit in a travel by then and potentially even sooner if they are tall!
